    Howayas,
I'm trying to find out how many registered hurlers there are in Ireland. I've googled the bejaysus out of it and checked the GAA site but no joy.
Does anyone out there know the answer?

Sorry I can't help you boscosmith, but the ESRI can, I can't remember where I saw it, but they did research recently enough with figures like that in it.

There are a few reports on the Irish Sports Council's website. The ballpark figure between hurling and camogie (from around 2006) is about 80,000 (ie. 3% of the adult population).

OP, there might be something on the exact number in the GAA's annual report if you haven't dug through it already.

It was in the ESRI report from a few years back. Its roughly around the same number as there is in Rugby, but a little less.

I fear that you will not get an answer to that question. I have been trying for many years and am no wiser than when I first asked the question.

What is a hurler? Is it a chap who plays in a hurling match about 50 times per year? Or who plays just one match per year - when full drunk on Boxing Day at the former students' annual get to-gether? Or is it a person whose main game is gaelic football and who plays hurling only when there is no football to play? Or is it a rugby player who, duiring the rugby closed season, plays a bit of hurling just to keep fit?

Trying to ascertain the number of hurling clubs in Ireland is nearly as difficult. Even if we confine ourselves to exclusively hurling clubs, there is an immence difference between a club based in a locality in which hurling is the most popular summer game for adults and a hurling club based in a gaelic football stronghold.

If you count the ones on the ditch, the number increases dramatically.
