Total tube noob here, wondering if someone can tell me the difference between 12ax7 and el34 tubes? My amp has el34's in it now but needs new tubes. The back panel says 12ax7 so Im wondering if Id be better off getting them or sticking with the el34.

12ax7 is a preamp tube, el34 is a poweramp tube. If you are doing a full retube you will need both.

After a little more research on tubes I realised how stupid that question really was :o

Na, stupid would have been not asking at all and shoving a 12AX7 into the EL34 slot!! :D

Actually, i seen a pic on the net somewhere of an adaptor for the EL34 socket, so that a 12AX7 preamp would fit in and do the job of a power valve. Crazy cnut.

It's not that crazy at all. A single 12AX7 is capable of delivering about a 1/2 watt when configured for push pull.
There is an amp called an army ant or something that used a 12AU7 in that configuration.
Often meant to make one myself for practising at home.

I'd prefer to have a circuit designed specifically for it than use an adapter for an octal valve, as there would be some many things to adapt and potentially go wrong.
