    Is this the cheapest UK "High Street" DVB-T2 box?

    Currys

    That box watty looks very familiar (its the same chassis as the Saorview box). So its obviously made by Vestel but with a T2 tuner.

    Lots of those Freeview HD boxes are now STG30 in shopping centres like Morrisons etc in the UK.

    Vestel T8300 Series

    Bush DVB680
    Ferguson F02HDB
    Xenius DVBX100HD
    Linsar FHD1
    Antiference HDSB
    Metronic T2HD
    ISIS ISI-DVBT2
    Finlux DVBT2665
    Technika STBHDV2010
    Digihome Freeview HD Box
    Luxor LUX-DVBT2-690
    Krystel DVBT2
    Lowry GSHDSTB1001

    Those all T2 HD boxes?

    Yes, Byte was thinking it looked like a Vestel.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,178 ✭✭✭STB

    Yes - they are taken off the OTA support for Freeview HD boxes.

    All of that list are the cheap ones as far as I know and all are Vestel (T8300 tuner).

    This is handy for finding who makes what.

    They will work with Saorview but put the channels in the 800's. In the summer the clock will be stuck on GMT on the Saoeview channels.

    Why stuck on GMT? We're in the same timezone (at the moment anyway!).

    If they are the same as the Walker box, could they be flashed with the walker firmware?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,417 ✭✭✭✭watty

    Probably not.

    It's Vestel firmware. Walker are just Distributers. They took over the old Mitsubishi Distribution of Vestel made Black Diamond TVs.

    Because it is only receiving out of region signals, unless the country code can be set to Ireland, or UK signals can be detected.

    No i wouldnt advise that. The tuner hardware is different for a start (T4800 on Saorview, T8300 on the Freeview HDs)

    All the T8300s should be the same, they are just rebadged. They probably have the same software on them anyhow for Freeview HD.

    Either way, the Walker is way over-priced. More money for less receiver.

    I agree Sam.

    The Xoro HRT 7510 HD DVB-T does all bar MHEG5 (no big deal).

    It also has PVR facilities and plays MKVs and Divx via USB. Its €41 before postage.

    I would be interested in one of these.
    Where could I get one at that price?

    Thanks

    The internet John. Google the model No and see where the cheapest with delivery is. They start at €41. Delivery should be about €15.

    Mainly France/Czech Republic/Germany sites

    An answer from Currys

    We don't range these boxes and aren't currently planning too.

    Why not?

    What comparable spec & price set boxes are you going to sell here?

    You sell plenty of TVs that are obsolete for Ireland (not Saorview compatible).

    You do realise that while most "Freeview" stuff won't work on Irish Digital (Saorview) and none at all will work on "Freeview HD", that ALL "Freeview HD" TVs and set-boxs will work on "Freeview" "Freeview HD" and "Saorview" (Irish Digital). Even doing the MHEG text and probabily MHEG5 anything else RTE does later (likely an MHEG based EPG and Interactive stuff).

    Irish MHEG is EXACTLY the version used on "Freeview HD" and "Freesat HD"

    See http://www.saortv.info/about/n-i-digital/

    Its DVB-T as in what we use in Ireland MPEG4 H264 DVB-T @ L4 (AC3/HE-AAC audio profile compliant also).

    These should be around €120 or so, not the cheapest and should do MPEG5

    Vestel T8300

    The following Freeview HD boxes are all based on this Vestel T8300 ( some possibly without MHEG5 support).

    The Vestel T8300 is currently also known as:

    * Antiference HDSB
    * Bush DVB680 ( Argos sell these)
    * Ferguson F02HDB
    * Ferguson F02HD
    * ISIS ISI-DVBT2
    * Krystel DVBT2
    * Linsar FHDF1
    * Linsar FHD1
    * Lowry GSHDTB1001
    * Luxor LUX-DVBT2-690
    * Metronic T2HD
    * Xenius DVB100HD
    * Finlux DVBT2665
    * Technika STVHDV201 ( Tesco Own Brand )
    * Digihome DVBT2-665

    Sorry to bring up a stale thread but I'm up north and see that the Technika (vestel) freeview HD box is £30 is Tesco.

    If I were to use it for saorview only (won't be in freeview range) will I have an issue with the clock being out by one hour or will it be OK.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 602 ✭✭✭jonnygee

    The stbhdv2010 is a vestel. I havent seen this model working.
    The stbhdh2010 is a harvard box.
    I have seen the hdh box working on saorview and the clock is an hour out. All freeview hd boxes that are used only for saorview will be an hour out in summertime it seems as they wont get the signal needed to change the clock. Some might have a menu option to manually change time, im not sure, but those two boxes dont.

    Definitely will be an hour out. I have used the Bush version on French TNT and it shows GMT all the year round.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 957 ✭✭✭Trevord

    Went ahead and bought one of the Technika HD boxes made by Vestel.

    Even though clock is out by an hour I note that the now and next programmes are still correct, so its not much of an issue.

    For £30 its not a bad saorview solution.

    I was thinking of a Humax HD Fox T2 as I believe these allow you to delete undesirable channels from the channel list. Has anyone got one of these? Are there any issues as regards Summer time settings for Saorview? Thanks.

    FreesatHD boxes do not handle summertime on Saorview. They do not handle the LCNs properly, they put RTE1 at 800. They do not do VHF, if RTE NL decide to go with VHF, they will not work. There may be other differences yet to be discovered, we do not know because the spec for the FeeviewHD (the DTG D Book) is not published.

    The Picnic box was a good idea at £20 but it did not do HD, and it also suffers from all these other ills. Be aware that there are possible gotchas coming down the track.

    Thanks, Sam, for taking an interest in my query. However, as far as I know, this particular box will tune VHF as well as UHF and will allow you to move channels to your preferred position. And, as I said, a major plus for me is that it allows deletion of the objectionables. I was hoping to hear from someone who actually has the box whether summertime can be correctly set for Saorview.

    For example, my main TV is a Sony "W" series and the time is correct for both Freeview and Saorview. My brother has a small-screen Sony "BX" in the kitchen and, by changing the time setting to Amsterdam of all places, the correct time is displayed for both Freeview and Saorview.

    I was wondering if there is some way to get the Humax to display the correct time. Thanks.

    The point I was making was that FreesatHD is a different standard, and compliance with it is no indicator to compliance with Saorview. Some manufacturers like Sony are brilliant at compliance, others, like Panasonic, are not so good. Always check that compliance with Saorview is guaranteed.

    Which Tesco in the north did you buy the box in. Thanks

    The one nearest City Airport. (Opposite side of the road from Ikea. Knock... something or other its called I think.)

    They had all three technika models there.

    Went to Tesco Connswater (Belfast) also but they only have the newest Technika box there for £70.

    The older Harvard and Vestel Technika models are reduced to £30 each.
