Is someone accessing my wireless network?

Hi folks, looking for advice or somebody with knowledge on my issue. I have been with UPC broadband for the last 3 years now. Last month I got a letter from them saying I had gone over my usage, I thought this was very strange as I moved a couple house a couple of months ago, and am not at home as much as I use to be so I am obviously not using the internet as much. UPC suggested that somebody may have hacked into my network and told me to change the password in my router, which I did, now I received another letter on Friday saying that I was over again for the 2nd month running now, despite me changing my password, should I be doing something else with the settings on my wireless router, or how do I know if somebody has hacked into my network, there is no way that I am over on my usage as before I would get home home at 5.30 and use the net, now I don't get home until after 7pm, so I am using it a lot less. Thanks.

Login to your router and check your wireless security settings. Make sure that you have WPA or WPA2 security enabled and set a decent password (8+ characters with upper & lowercase etc.). There should be somewhere on your router where you can see what computers have connected via wireless - check what machines have connected and verify which ones are yours. For the machines that are yours, make sure that there are no P2P (peer-to-peer) programs (Limewire, Morpheus, Bearshare, Kazaa, uTorrent etc.) running continuosly. It may be that you are actually using the bandwidth without realising it.
