I've tried a tracert to my friend in Kerry, I'm in cork. And the route that my connection goes is: cork (me) -> Dublin -> Netherlands -> Austria -> new york - > Washington DC -> Kansas -> Kerry(my friend)

Why does UPC need to go all over the world when the connection i was testing is less that 90km away? Could it indicate a problem with my line?

There's no problem with your line. It's UPC's policy to peering. They don't directly peer to a lot of the Irish networks so sometimes you've to go all around the houses (or the world) to get to someone on another Irish network.
