I took my Peugeot 307 through NCT today.
It failed due to a worn Rack & Pinion.

    description is as follows:

    Item: Steering linkage (43)
    Description: Rack & Pinion
    Reason: Worn
    Location: NearsideFront

I usually carry out my own repairs but I'm not familiar with the Rack & pinion.

Can anyone give me an idea of what has to be done to repair/replace this?

They must mean the steeing rack...thats the only Rack & Pinion on the 307.
Going by servicebox they steering rack can be adjusted....This may take the backlash from the Rack & Pinion which would prevent the need to replace it.
Heres a diagram of the steering rack on the 307.

Thanks Row. I'll investigate adjusting the steering rack.

How would they have established that this is worn? I mean it is a visual inspection, what did they see that told them this is worn?

They must have noticed excess play/backlash when turning the steering wheel....
What mileage have you on your 307..??
I have seen some of the diesel 307's getting to 250k mls without any steering rack problems....were the trackrod ends checked..??
