Bah, a foot of snow is not epochal. That's positively meagre compared to a lot of countries. We need some perspective here.

Well, maybe this has been "pre-perspectivised" for you (i.e. epochal for Ireland).

Epochal on weather forums in this part of the world means the winter is starting to edge into the top ten category, one that will be recalled years from now. It doesn't mean organize a woolly mammoth hunt or anything along those lines. It won't take much more to get 2010-11 into the top ten, I mean it's not exactly a super-high bar is it?

Sorry, sometimes when I say "this part of the world" I feel like I'm actually there ... this is probably why I have a moment of shock when I walk out the door here and the weather isn't like what I've been thinking about somewhere else, like Ireland or maybe the Great Lakes or any other place that actually has weather. We just have a pretty much constant fog here.

Listen, I hope this all comes and goes without doing too much further harm to the economy, seems like the last thing you need at this point is a big snowstorm. My weather forum buddies will have me flogged for saying this, but you probably don't need anything too severe at this point.

    (heresy)

You'll have to keep an eye on M.T.'s daily forecasts on the Daily Forecasts thread on this forum, especially closer to the date when there will be a greater degree of certainty to what may occur.

It would all be guesswork at this stage.

There is obviously the potential for snow, but the specifics as to where when and how much are more than a bit vague at this stage.

Weather forecasters in cold weather are a bit like economists during an economic crash. They seem to be taking a little too much joy in imparting their belief that we are all doomed :p

This setup looks increasingly good for severe cold, as the flow goes very slack after the initial wintry blast, and there should be at least some snow cover laid down in that early phase, then some clearing under very cold "uppers" -- winds can easily go calm and with any long clear intervals at night, could see temperatures well down below -10 C and possibly approaching record values around Saturday. Everything would have to come together just right for this, but it's something to watch. The same applies over in Britain where a few spots could fall below -20 C.

    From that Joe Bastardi guy..

"As is my habit, I just want to give you a heads-up on what is coming after a period of cold that will be something to be hold... and if you be holding something, make sure you have your gloves on or your hands may freeze on contact"
