Lib Dem aide was Russia's best spy in 30 years, says top KGB defector

The blonde Commons researcher facing deportation from Britain after being accused of espionage is Russia’s most effective spy in 30 years, a top KGB defector claims.
Oleg Gordievsky – a double agent for MI6 in the Seventies and Eighties – said Russian-born Ekaterina Zatuliveter ‘caused more damage than all other KGB agents put together’.
‘She was the strongest and most useful KGB agent for the last 30 years,’ he added.

    More on Gordievsky here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oleg_Gordievsky

There seems to be a marked increase from Russia on the spying front in recent years. Also, bear in mind that they have resumed their Cold War era long range flights probing Britain's air defences, and their submarines have been found to be tracking the Trident nuclear deterrent submarines out of Faslane in Scotland. Are the Russians planning something, one would have to ask?

One of the highest ranking defectors in KGB history, Anatoliy Golitsun, claimed that the Soviet Union would 'throw the fight' i.e. let the Soviet Union apparently collapse in order to lull the West into a false sense of security, before regrouping in 20 years and attacking. A long range deception strategy, he called it.

Before you dismiss this as far fetched, it is worth bearing in mind that of Golitsun's 194 intelligence predictions, 139 have been fulfilled. This is unprecedented in intelligence terms.

    He must be pretty bright.

    He must be pretty bright.

Extremely well placed too, it would seem. He was reportedly part of the inner circle of the KGB strategy department. A circle, within a circle, within a circle, if you follow. Only a dozen or so in the world would be privy to this information.

Significantly, he is also the only known defector who has had to remain in hiding since his defection. All the others have moved relative openly. (In that they could be got to, if desired.)

Yup, not exactly a man with the current ear of the Kremlin, is he?

We'll know in a year if he was right. Of course, it's arguable he's already proved wrong, as the USSR had effectively ended in 1990.

It is not uncommon for ex-intelligence officers to still be in the loop of current administration thinking, albeit informally. They love their gossip just like the rest of us :)

As for whether he is right or wrong, indeed we shall see. But the collapse of the USSR took the US totally by surprise. Not one CIA officer had predicted its collapse. As I say, it is just one man's theory. But the fact that he is so highly placed lends credibility to his claims. But that doesn't necessarily make them true either.

One thing is undeniable though-Russia is definitely upping the ante on the espionage front.

Oh dear Jesus shall i even bother......

Please do. I'm sure your opinion is much more valuable than that of a 30 year decorated veteran of the KGB and intelligence analysis.

These days your average "spy" would do better to google-mine than sleep with an MP.

russia attacking who and with what?? outdated navy, outdated airforce, most of their icbms probably wouldn't make it out of their silos ffs

the days of russia as a superpower are long gone, russia has more to worry about internally than worrying about whether to attack france, germany, usa etc

He's a traitor who defected a quarter of a century ago. There's a standing death sentence on his head. Father Ted is more in the Kremlin loop than he is.

That goes to the paucity of the CIA in that era. From the minute the Berlin wall came down it was a matter of time. Anyone who visited the Soviet Union at that time would agree. I was in Belarus in early 1990 and the general public were panic-stricken about what would happen, but were openly discussing independence and beginning to resurrect their own flags and language.
If the CIA missed that, God love them.

He's not highly placed. He's the absolute last man on the planet who would know what the FSB are doing.
One thing is undeniable though-Russia is definitely upping the ante on the espionage front.

The death of Litvinenko didn't suggest that to you?

After the humiliation and incompetence of the Yeltsin years, Russia since Putin has got it's balls back and has been re-establishing itself.

There is a saying about the Fomer Yugoslavia in the late 1990s.

The Russians spied on the Americans, the Americans spied on the Russians, the French spied on the Americans, and the British spied on everyone.
