Help needed: plastic melted onto cooker hob...

Don't ask how this happened (I am trying to protect someone else's reputation!):

Plastic from a kettle melted onto a gas cooker hob (matt chrome finish). It resulted in a small fire which, thankfully, was put out with ease. However, the plastic has left an almighty mess on the hob and I'm trying to figure out how to remove it while doing the least damage possible to the hob itself....

    Any suggestions?

    JB
