I don't know if this is a stupid question or not but would using a guitar amp for an iPod at a party do any damage to the amp or speaker at all? And would it make a difference for tube or solid state amps?

    No damage, most likely.

The input jack is expecting instrument level (e.g. from a pickup) and you plugged in a line level source which is significantly higher. You'd drive the preamp, probably distort it, but it's not likely to damage the amp.

Once you keep the volume from the iPod low, there shouldn't be a problem at all.

Depends. If its drum and bass or something with a low end id steer clear and if you are going to run it through an amp dont go past 3-4 of the way with the volume.

My brother did this to my guitar amp without telling me once for a party. My speaker was never the same after it.

You'd have to go into the equaliser and reduce/remove the low end to be safe.

After that the only damage will be to your ears, as I will sound like complete ****e.
