I'm not sure if this has been asked before or not but I have been asked by a farmer to shoot piegons that are coming into his field of rape.I went today to have a look and there was a few hundred in it so my question is can I shoot them in this cold spell?

Would the Harris Hawk hunt them ?

    More f**ked up legislation

Wood pigeon are deemed "game" yet they can be shot out of season if damaging crops. Now confusion as we've a bad weather ban

if the farmer asked you and they are damaging crop i would shoot away also. but givin the way things are you could ring the nargc .......they did fight a case in the courts so we could continue shooting pigeon for crop protection i hope they have not changed their position on this... they will prob tell you not to in the bad weather they would not want you to risk your safety .meaning the componsation fund... please let us know what they say if you decide to ring them

08/12/2010 - Temporary Closure of Hunting (Open) Season for BirdsThe Department of the Environment, Heritage and Local Government has decided that a temporary closure of the hunting season for wild birds will start on Wednesday 8th December 2010 due to the severe recent and continuing freezing weather conditions across the State.

Ciaran O’Keeffe, Director of the National Parks and Wildlife Service of the Department said “While the weather has improved in the past few days we are still experiencing freezing night-time conditions across the country. Even with the forecast for a gradual improvement in the weather in the coming days, it is essential that wild birds are given some time to recover from the recent bad spell. Accordingly we are closing the Hunting Season for one week.”

The Department consulted with the National Association of Regional Game Councils (NARGC), other representative hunting organisations, farming organisations and Bird watch Ireland, all of whom support the initiation of a temporary hunting ban. O’Keeffe added “I would like to thank the hunting bodies who brought in voluntary hunting bans for their members last week. This was greatly appreciated by the Department”.

The temporary closure is to protect wild ducks, geese and waders and other wild game birds during this cold weather. The National Parks and Wildlife Service urges all hunters to respect this measure which clearly has a conservation benefit for the long-term populations of these wild game species. This temporary closure of the hunting season will allow for the hunting of pen-reared birds, but this will require a licence. Applicants for such a licence should immediately contact the NPWS at its office in Bullyboy, Co.Monaghan, Tel: (042) 9748712 begin_of_the_skype_highlighting (042) 9748712 end_of_the_skype_highlighting. Details can also be found on www.npws.ie .

The situation will be reviewed by Wednesday 15th December.

Wildlife Act 1976 (Temporary Suspension of Open Season) (No.2) Order 2010 (SI 582 of 2010 [101KB])

Note to Editors:The species concerned are Mallard, Teal, Gadwall, Wigeon, Pintail, Shoveler, Scaup, Tufted Duck, Pochard, Goldeneye, Golden Plover, Snipe, Jack Snipe, Red-legged Partridge, Cock Pheasant, Woodcock, Woodpigeon, Canada Goose, Greylag Goose and Ruddy Duck.

    Yeah - I'd go with a Pere/Saker cross:)

PS: Woodpigeons damaging crops are included in the yearly derogations so I'd shoot away myself

She might get them on the rise and mug on the ground but she is out of action now with a injury anyway.

Hi, Did anybody get a definitive position on this?
the NPWS wording seems explicit in that Woodpigeon is closed.
and anecdotal information from an NARGC court case where pigeon was shoot over stubble indicates that you are safe to shoot pigeon out of season if they are doing crop damage.

    Not sure what to do?

Pigeons can be shot during the current ban under derogation as per the procedure during the closed season (summer months).
You must have been requested by the landowner to shoot the pigeons or at the least have an agreeable landowner who will claim that he asked you to shoot the pigeons ;)

You cannot use decoys, of any kind, to shoot pigeons under derogation.

Thats my understanding too - I don't know why there is such confusion on this matter as the derogation is very clear:rolleyes:

Are ye sure that we can't use decoys, to shoot pigeon out of season for crop protection.
I have never heard of that, and it sounds impossible.

    110%

In that case anybody shooting pigeon for crop protection between Jan 31st and November 1st and using decoys are acting outside of the law!

    that can't be right.

I suppose it could be argued that they are only there because of your decoys

Yes - the derogation is very clear on that so shoot away people:)
