Creaky handbrake on hills

    I drive a '97 Toyota Starlet.

I find that lately (prior to the snow/ice, so not weather related) when I'm on a hill with the handbrake on it's incredibly creaky. It's always been a tiny bit creaky but it's getting very loud and frequent now. To the point where I'm afraid I'm going to roll backwards (this has not happened though!)

Is this a sign that my handbrake failing? Or does it need to be tightened or something?

I reckon taking it to a garage is the way to go but as I'm a girl with no guy in the know to come with me (my OH knows nothing about cars and doesn't drive), I don't want to get ripped off or taken for a ride. So I'd like to have a rough idea of what to say to the mechanic.

Any advice would be really really appreciated.

    Thanks
