Issue upgrading IE6

    I'm having a problem upgrading a laptop running XP SP2 from IE6 to IE8.

I tried to upgrade to IE7 first. It looked like it was going through the motions but then said IE failed to install. Tried the same with IE8. Looked like all was going well but failed to install.

Used the Internet Explorere Troubleshooting shortcut put on the Desktop by IE8 install but nothing seems to work. Tried stopping the antivirus before installing, all updates downloaded etc. Any ideas whats causing the install to fail? Thanks.

    K

UPDATE: I must confirm if it's running SP2 or SP3

Type "winver" in the run dialog to confirm what version of windows you are running.

However i wouldnt even bother with IE8 anymore. Google Chrome is the way to go. Far superior to IE6/7/8.

Microsoft require updates to go though IE, newer versions of IE are ,more secure

Might want to empty the temp folder that windows updates download too, can't remember the name offhand

I would download CCleaner and run the cleaner utility with default settings. Also, use the registry cleaner tool with its default settings - do several sweeps with this until it comes back null. Then try your update again.

They've also got the IE9 beta out now.. but you should never, ever browse in an old browser. Theyre upgraded for Security Reasons, as much as performance and feature reasons.

No luck installing SP3. It was going through the install but then I got the following error 'Service Pack 3 canceled'

Any ideas what could be causing the install to fail?

Try downloading the standalone version of SP3, Also before installing it uninstall or disable your anti virus/firewall software as they can conflict with it,

Found that page alright when trying to find a fix on microsoft site.

I've attached the log file if anyone wants to take a quick read. None of the error codes listed on one of the fix pages on MS site are listed in the log file

I've noticed this problem could be caused by a program called Microgfx, do you have such an application installed? This page has some suggestions,
