All depends on where you want to end up really?. Are you travelling the coast and then spending a year in Syd or just here on hols?.

Either way you are probably gonna need to come back to Sydney to fly home eventually?. So I reckon North to South. Buy a car in Cairns, sell it in Sydney.

Dont buy some Backpacker ready machine in a Hostel, chances are you will be the 10th to 15th group to drive the stones out of it up and down the east coast.

Try Trading post online or a few otheres, tis really a Buyers market out there at the moment, I've helped a few friends buy cars recently over here
I got meself an E34 535 BMW with 7 months Registration for les than $2K, and the car is immaculate,

Also managed to Get an MQ Nissan patrol for $4K and it was kitted out for Camping by some grey nomads who bought a Merc Campervan instead $18K. Bought and moved on an old Audi A100 a few months ago, paid $400 for the Car, replaced the Fuses in the Electric Windows and Sunroof, car as good as New, sold on for $1200

there are Bargains out there if you know where to look.

Finally got an Eyeball on the Merc "Çampervan''
its an ex NSW Ambulance, Turbo diesel with a separate Aircon unit on the roof, 2007 model with about 170K on the clock, immaculate.

theres a logic to buying a decent Van even if you're only here for a year, After we send about $3K fitting the thing out it will be one of the most impressive campers on the road, and it should hold around that value for a couple of years.

Yeah, but I've nerver had a Car with a warranty before, the last couple of years I've convinced the Boss that new Cars were a retarded waste of Money when I could get Something Cheap and Second hand to do the job just as well, He wanted to Buy a new Nissan Patrol Ute, but there is no fuppin way I'll allow another Nissan on the fleet, He loves them I hate them horid thing to drive and mechanicaly inferior to the Cruisers, this came up as a compromise, Instead of him buying a GU Nissan I get a Great wall and he gets an 07-09 falcon/fairlane or an 03-05 5 series, he's not a BMW Fan tho

Yeah I know I pick it up on the 15th and do my citizenship on the 25th, am thinking of growing a mullet.

Was sort of limited as the car policy is $15K per year + Fuel card but it has to be 4 door, Combined L/100km is under 10 and no 4WD or Utes.

went and looked at every thing else and the Series II SV6 was the best option as its still a 6 but only 9.8L/100km and fully optioned up for $38.2K.

Wouldn't bother with the Great wall ......do the job rite and get a Hilux SR5

Citizenship on Australia Day, Seems to be teh done thing, The Aussie Company car setup does seem geared towards Ford and Holden tho, Protectionism Anyone??

the only reason I'd buy a Great Wall is because I've never had a Spanky new car before, otherwise I'll stick with tradition and buy an ex mine Landcruiser before the Auctions

when we were in Oz me and the missus bought a car from this place in Melbourne

    http://www.backpackersautosales.com.au/

Drove the boll**ks outta of it all over Oz in every State and never had any problems. Sold it on via gumtree about a year later in Adelaide.

1986 Holden Camira!!! ah happy times!!!

The Ceremony is on Tuesday night and then a special invite to the council BBQ on Australia day.

Yeah my current car is a bog standard Aug 09 Falcon but hate it as its a complete bucket of sh*te and rarely use it for private use (had 2 commodores before that), instead my missus has a car allowance/fuel card option as well and we got a Toyota 4WD last November and use that for going anywhere.

I had a look at BMW 320d and X3 nearly died when I heard the price.... any European car in this country is stupid money. Still think the SV6 suits my purpose as it has a 500L boot and 280 horses, I am going be doing a run up around Coffs and Northern Tablelands every few months so need something reliable and fairly big & comfortable. Plus that series II comes with the IQ system which has Bluetooth/iPhone streaming, 15 CD ripping, Reverse camera, proximity sensors, Sat Nav and more than I can remember.

Those great wall utes are only like $20k on the road....hard to beat Toyota in quality though...you get what you pay for.

when you say Northern tablelands I presume you're talkin about somewhere in NSW Like Grafton or Casino or Kyogle or Tenterfield, thats around the area where My farm is, You can swing by if you want some weekend, The more bodies we have pickin Spuds the Better ;):D

those Commodores are Very well equipped aint they, If I was in the Car market like that tho I'd have considered a Territory for what you want to do, but then you wouldnt get the same amount of gadgets.

Boss came in just as I posted that previous post

Apparently I'm havin a test drive on Tuesday, well that'll decide it fair sharpish

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,435 ✭✭✭mandrake04

Territory was over 10L/100km at 11.6 as was the Kluger @ 11.0 which would have been my first choice.

Still happy enough with the SV6 as at that price on an operating lease it wont cost me a single cent over 4 years and I still get to walk away with it. If I went for something over $42K mark I would have probably had to chip in a $50-$100 a month of my own money for the privilege.

JAYSUS, what a steamin pile of DogPoo :(.

If I wanted a Crappy mid 90's ill concieved and Badly constructed Ute There are a number of Mazda and Isuzu Options already on the Market, Tinny construction, felt cheap, Dash straight out of a 90's Isuzu, engine from an 18th century Sweatshop, suspension from the Middle ages.

I took the Shortest possible Route on the Test drive, The seat was Uncomfortable, the Vehicle was cheap and tacky, the engine was unresponsive, the Steering was clunky the Ride was lumpy, the Vehicle itself is Hideously ugly, if they were offerin it to me fro Free with free Petrol I would probably still tell them to Fúck off

That said tho, Now that the Boss is aware of how much I dislike them I'd say its odds on that I'll be driving one by the end of the year:o

On a slightly different note. Was going to buy a car from a dealer this week. What exactly does anyone know should I be getting in the line of paperwork from them and what do I have to do in terms of registration etc after buying it? I've heard of these blue/ pink slips etc but not sure of what's what.
    Cheers

    In NSW

A pink slip is an annual road worthiness test for cars over 5 years old like the NCT

and a blue slip is the Engineers report for modified cars, or cars that have non stock equipment.

Green slip is CTP (compulsory third party insurance) which is compulsory to obtain registration (rego or road tax)

Thanks for that. So I presume then that I'd just be looking for the pink slip off them and I'd have to get the green slip myself? Or if the rego is in date does that mean that I don't have to renew the green slip until it goes out of date?

The green slip and rego comes hand in hand, if you bought a car with 6 month rego you will have 6 months CTP (green slip) as well. When ever your rego is to be renewed you cant renew it with the RTA unless you renew the CTP first and if the car is over 5 years you need the pink slip as well.

Thanks for the information mandrake. Got it all sorted anyway. Bought a Toyota Camry there the last day and have transferred the ownership and all there today. Actually had almost a year of rego on it. Now all I must do is get some insurance before I drive it into the back of a Porche

Any tips on a 4wd to do Fraser for less than 5 grand? I was thinking I'd let the folks use it for a month including the Fraser trip and then sell it on. Am I nuts?

    I'm thinking:
    GQ Patrol
    Suzuki Sierra
    Suzuki Vitara

I don't want going near the Fraser rental companies again and they're looking like a over a grand anyway.

Can someone in the know explain the pitfalls of Roadworthiness, esp. in Victoria?

As far as I know (and pls correct me if wrong):

You can't sell a car without a roadworthy certificate in VIC. Even if you exchange money and receipts, the new owner cannot register the car in their name until they've roadworthied the car. The disadvantage to that is if they prang it because they're driving it before RWC comes through, it's YOUR car they've pranged.

Basically himself sold our 15 year old Falcon with no RWC just before he went into the army. The fella who bought the Falcon hasn't sorted out the RWC yet, and is driving the car around locally. I text him every week to see what's the story - I knew the car needed work doing to pass RWC, up to $1500 worth, and husband told the buyer this when they were exchanging money.

Thing is I'm terrified to cancel my insurance on the Falcon (which is still running out the end of its year and I wouldn't get much cash back on it anyway) in case the guy who bought it ploughs it into some soccer-mom's 4x4 full of kids or something before he gets the RWC and while it's still registered in husband's name.

    Opinions?

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 6,869 ✭✭✭Mahatma coat

You Can SELL a car without a RWC, you can Sell a car without Wheels and an Engine, you just have to tell the buyer that it lacks RWC/Wheels/Engine etc.

the Buyer cannot re register the Car without a RWC tho. So He's probably doing what a lot of people Do and trying to run out the Rego under your name. AFAIK its the same in VIC as it is in QLD, they have 30 Days from recieving the Car to submit the Change of ownership forms and register the car in their name. if they havent done that then technically the car is still yours, report it as stolen, that should focus the other guys attention ;)

You can sell a car in Victoria without roadworthy, however, the seller removes the number plates from the car and returns them to VicRoads along with a copy of the paperwork showing the buyer details etc.. From this moment on the seller is no longer connected to this car and is not responsible for it. The buyer can then go to VicRoads and get the number plates back and has a certain number of days (I think it’s around 30 or so) to obtain RWC. The car is now in the buyers name and they must produce the RWC cert to VicRoads when they obtain it. The seller is not liable for any damage caused by this car if this procedure is followed.

However, often what happens, especially with people who are leaving the country for good is, they will sell the car, leave the plates on it and not do the paperwork. In this case the car is still in the sellers name and they would be liable for any damage aswell as speeding & parking tickets. Selling a car in this way is also illegal.

The reason people sell the car with the plates on it is because they will get a good bit more money for the car as the buyer will not have to get RWC and fix any repairs which may be need.

If your husband did the first then there is no need to worry. The second case is a different story.

I’m pretty sure what I’ve said is right but an open to correction.

    Hmm I dont know

    Registered vehicles
A registered vehicle must be sold with a Certificate of Roadworthiness (RWC). You can still transfer registration up to 3 months after it expires. After this time the registration will be cancelled.

    Seller’s responsibilities:

    * provide the buyer with a Certificate of Roadworthiness that is no more than 30 days old when the sale takes place.
    * fill in the ‘seller’ part of the Application for Transfer of Registration form

There is the place to look at

    http://www.vicroads.vic.gov.au/Home/Registration/BuySellTransferVehicles/BuyingSelling/

Yeah, I forget that little detail meself sometimes too, The Plate belong to YOU not the Car, when you sell the car or scrap it you are supposed to give the Plates back if its not got a RWC. its different to Ireland in that respect, trailers are supposed to be registered seperatley too

Trailers have their own registration and number plate, its about $140. Plus you need a pink slip every year for the rego renewal ($25)

From your own link to VicRoads it is fairly clearly outlined.

There are two ways a car can be sold in Victoria. Registered or Unregistered. In order to sell a vehicle Registered you must provide a RWC.
If you are not providing RWC then the only other option of selling it is Unregistered which involdes removing the plates etc.
Below is the rest of the information in the link you provided.

    Unregistered vehicles
An unregistered vehicle can be sold without a Certificate of Roadworthiness.

    Seller’s responsibilities:
    • cancel vehicle registration, remove number plates and return them to VicRoads. Refunds on registration are available if you cancel registration before it expires and the registration was in your name.
    Buyer’s responsibilities:

    a couple of points

    1) in Australia new utes make sense the tax write offs and residual value make them work hence why so many companies keep the fleet up newish unlike ireland where new stuff is throwing money away

    2) how can you call a patrol inferior to a cruiser, yes the ZD30 engined patrols are proven not to be worth a pinch of ****, however the TD42 and TD42t engined patrols are known for superior relaibilty than the 1HD-FTE engined cruiser of the same age.

    3) furthermore if your talking about the relability of 1VD-FTV 4.5 V8 engined cruisers is they are unreliable, its a well acknoweldged fact that they have oil consumption problems that still arent ironed out 3 yrs later

    4) the latest cruiser ute front track is 30mm wider to accomodate the 4.5 V8, they havent increased the rear track to match hence there name as a "landcrab" awakward on tracks

    5) it is a well know fact the patrol is more stable on hills it has greater roll over angle

    6) i dont understand how you think there horid to drive the patrol is more "luxorious" if you can use that word than the cruiser and a coil sprung st is obviously way more comfortable than a cruiser

so the patrol v cruiser argument is denpendat on what comparsion your making the TD42 engined patrol is a superior ute

    6) you mentioned buying an ex mine ute, you clearly have money to burn or are blinded by the "ssupposed good value" you couldnt possibly buy a worse vehicle in Australia than an ex mine car

    7) I cant beleive anyone would even wast there time going to a great wall dealer, worthless heap of chinese ****e

for the record i've owned cruisers and patrols for yrs and yrs i currently have a 200 series cruiser (amazon) and wrecked GQ patrol ute (TD42t) engine with 450,000km on it, that has pulled 3 ton 300km off road in 40 degrees last week and regualry does so and has never ever ever missed a beat, i am considering getting a v8 cruiser ute but the oil consumption would need to be sorted.
