I was looking for something between a netbook and a laptop, a netbook with a bigger screen but something with a bit of kick (decent ram).

Have a budget of €500 to €600 but at a push could go for a macbook if it was worth it in the end.

Have been looking at the http://techreport.com/articles.x/18883

    and the http://techreport.com/articles.x/18883

Would also need a netbook style long life battery.

Thanks guys any opinions would be appreciated.

    AL.

You might take a look on NVIDIA ION platform (Lenovo IdeaPad S12, ASUS Eee PC 1201N). Have a look on Nokia Booklet 3G, also.

Had a look at some over the weekend swaying towards the mac book air, class looking machine. The price is the only thing.

Sorry about that the other link should have been,

Its very hard to source the newer ASUS, ACER and Lenovo netbooks in Ireland with paying a premium. There is a newer version of the Asus netbook you linked in your first post, the Asus EEE 1215n but good luck getting it delivered to Ireland for any kind of reasonable price!
Take a look at the Dell M101z, good spec and good reviews for €500. Battery life isnt great though according to reviews. I'm planning on getting one soon

Yeah just read around a bit now and saw lots of 'real' users complaining of excessive heat and fan noise. There was only vague mentions of it in the reviews I read a couple of months back. Think I might give it a miss so. Back to my search :(

Thanks for those links. Looking for a netbook for a pressie - the MSI is attracting me more (bigger screen/higher resolution, 2GB RAM, HDMI out, W7 Home Premium) tbh. What do you think?

Anyone else any experience of these two, or further advice?

    Price is max €350, btw.

The MSI looks good but has a very poor battery, 2-3 hours on some reviews. Harvey Norman have the Asus EEE PC1201T (linked earlier) http://techreport.com/articles.x/18883 at the minute with decent battery and spec for €349.

Am in the same market myself, been doing a lot of research

the asus 1215n - great, 7 hour batt life (will get about 4 hour 30 in reality with decent use), no real issues apart from fragile adaptor pin, easy to get, order from amazon.co.uk

There are several 11.6 inch 'laptops' - a lot of people saying that this is the perfect screen size.. some of these get 7 to 8 hours.. worth looking at the hp dm, acer and toshiba models, am really looking into these myself

At the moment there is no real star.. they all seem to be alright with one or two minor niggles

There are some 13.3 inch laptops.. but that is almost over the line.. i think the max best screen size for a true portable is 11.6 or 12

€479 for the 1215n here http://www4.hardwareversand.de/articledetail.jsp?agid=842&aid=36988&lid=2 with €30 shipping, think I might wait for komplett to get some more stock in again. Can't justify paying over €1000 for an apple mac either, so staying with windows this looks the best bet for me.

Yeah I was looking at hardwareversand but I'm pretty certain the keyboard will be german. Its not that much different though if your willing to put up with it. Think I'll wait for komplett as well and just pick it up from their collection point to try and avoid any hassle.

Just seen what looks like a nice machine in a bricks and mortar beside me. A Toshiba T230 13.3", 3gb, 320HD, Win 7 64 bit, 10hr battery. All for €649 which I thought was a bit steep but for that price he will put office on it word, excel etc.

Late note, but... amazon.co.uk had it for Eur 500 (it's not that much tbh). Oddly enough ebay.ie have it for extortion prices.

However waiting for komplett.ie is waiting for valentines day IE 14th of Febs they said!

I wait the 1215N because for its lightness and traveling (shame you can't slip in the 3G sim card slots, above the ram, such as the older asus models of them). I am looking around, but I still want to get 1215N asus, it has out performed it's rivals 12" eee pcs. also the reliability is second to none.

I would rather get one now that waiting until later, a month and a half later.

I know dozens of sites that online shops that have it , however in different language. That's makes me iffy with that.

oh yes, and it's the ION 2(ION is in the 1015PEM). Which makes HD possible in the stable mode and the 12.1" means you can play quite a few games Star Craft 2, COH 4 and Left For Dead 2 if you like playing then they run quite smooth and med-high quality. At the end of the day it does exactly what it says on the time and then more!

Just went as far as I could without actually ordering the 1215n on amazon.co.uk and it comes to €547.88 delivered :(

They add £70 vat when you get to the final checkout screen

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,004 ✭✭✭Lord Khan

Not sure if we get that extra tax from uk, I know you get it of the states normal postal service. However, when I was ordering from komplett.ie I use DHL I didn't have any extra bill to pay

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,067 ✭✭✭youcancallmeal

No the tax is right, you have to put in the delivery address before the final payment screen so it knows Ireland is the delivery address. Delivery cost itself is only around £10 which is quite reasonable though. If you can wait and can pick it up yourself Komplett is still probably the best option

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,004 ✭✭✭Lord Khan

But ... it's put down for a month and a half. Although, that is the other komplett.* sites. Some of them do have it some don't.

Actually, I've read and watched several video reviews and some say that there was no bluetooth in theirs, others say there was in theirs.

Just one thing that worries me a little tbh. I have several bluetooth devices and would kinda need the 1215N to support it.
If any of you have already bought the 1215N is there bluetooth on it?

google eee and forum and you'll find the asus forums with sub forum for the 1201 which includes the 1215

Honestly its the best 'supernetbook' out there.. and it seems.. the only one

Anyone getting vat or tax issues with amazon? surely you have a mate or someone who lives in UK get it del free to them on super saver delivery then they can post it over very well packaged for 20 euros or less

I am thinking of getting the 1215 myself, its getting a bit of a cult status now, the power of a good laptop, with the portability and good batt life of a netbook.. perfect

Yeah, but Where the hell are they for sale in Ireland >_<

Btw, if you get regular post you WILL have to pay quite a bit, but couriers and imo you don't pay anything extra, the high price was worth it in my honest opinion.

btw get the 1215N, not the 1215T.
I'm growing sick of people talking how better the larger 15"-17" ones are. of course they are but they are twice as heavy. Netbook is only used when I am not at home and traveling. Even if going down to the coffee shop! tbh it's great for a student life, cheap-ish small and light to carry all day

I'd have one ages ago... if I could friggin' find it at a cheap (euro 500-600) cost and yet it cost USD 470 in the states
