Does the cold weather cause you to use more fuel? Does driving around slowly in the snow make a difference?

It does a bit, but the biggest difference makes the distance you travel. If you take short trips, the fuel consumption will rise significantly, if you drive long distances, the difference will be marginal.

Gone from 6.9 - 7.5 l/100k in my case according to the computer.
Warming up the engine for about 5 mins each way and extra heater combined with slower stop start traffic makes the difference.

    Of course it does.

The first thing you do is put the heater on full to warm up the cabin, plus you put the heated windscreen/rearscreen on to clear the snow/ice. It also takes the engine alot longer to warm up to the optimum efficent temperature. All this consumes extra fuel.

My fuel consumption has stayed constantly good. I've a decent commute.. an hour in, an hour home. This week it has been an extra 30 mins each way, driving slower and more carefully, but my journey consumption is around 5.0l per 100km. Driving an octavia 1.9 TDI combi estate 4x4.
