RAG Week - Get Amongst!

RAG Week 2011 is taking place from Monday, January 17th, to Friday, January 21st. All money raised will be donated to a number of Trinity based charities. There will be a large amount of various activities taking place during each day and night. The Trinity charities which the proceeds from RAG Week go towards are VDP, VTP, S2S, Suas, FLAC, Amnesty, Cancer Soc, and the Student Hardship Fund.

    RAG Week Fundraisers

A new idea we ha...ve this year is the creation of RAG Week Fundraisers. These are people who sign up to raise money through getting involved in activities already taking place, or by coming up with their own ideas and doing them during RAG Week 2011. This idea can be anything at all, and you can collect money in whichever way you wish. There is no limit on a maximum or minimum you need to raise to be a RAG Week Fundraiser. All you need to do is pop over to the Trinity Students' Union Front Office in House 6 to register your details and pick up a RAG Week Fundraiser Sponsorship form, and a RAG Week Fundraiser t-shirt.

Each t-shirt will say "I am <blank> for RAG Week 2011". In this space you fill in what you're doing for RAG Week, and use this to help you gather funds from friends, family, class mates, or anyone at all! Instead of asking people to donate for events in which they may not know anyone involved, we are now bringing RAG Week into the lecture halls and different groups throughout Trinity, and to the family and friends of the students too. We believe this will hugely increase the total money raised for the RAG Week charities, and make RAG Week 2011 an interactive and unmissable event.

Some fundraising ideas are: Hair dye/shave, waxing, sleep-out, long distance walk, run, or cycle, table quiz, 24 hour fast/silence. These are just a few guidelines, and we encourage everyone to be as inventive and original with their fundraising ideas as they want.

If you think you could bring enthusiasm to RAG Week 2011 and help us raise much needed funds for these Trinity charities please get in touch by e-mailing genockey@trinityents.com, or just pop into Front Office in House 6 to register your details and pick up your sponsorship form today. We'll be in touch with you about collecting your t-shirt once you have registered.

    Cheers,

    All @ TrinityEnts

BREAKING NEWS: Rag week is announced in TCD. 99% of students do not care.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 451 ✭✭AndrewJD

In fairness, as long as a few people care, it's kind of alright. Same with SHAG week, 99% won't have listened/didn't need to listen, but if it stopped one or two people from getting an STI now or in the future, it's no bad thing.

That's a bull**** argument. You expect a return on investment of the money that gets poured into the SU to be more than 1% of the student population. Spending several thousand euro to make sure that "one or two" people don't get an STI isn't worth it.

Yup, the SU spent thousands of euro on Shag Week. Nearly ten thousand in fact. A pity only one student learned something from it.

The original argument wasn't that it was a waste of money, just that students don't care. Two separate things. Yeah they did spend too much money. They do spend too much money. They'll continue to spend too much money. I'm not that happy about it.

And (not trying to be rude but), please take the time to sit in on an HIV clinic one morning before commenting on what's too much money to spend on preventing STIs. I'll never forget it.

In fairness, STI prevention is similar to healthy eating advice- we all know how to avoid STIs and obesity, you always(always) wear a condom, and you eat properly and exercise once in a while. Everyone know it, all you can do is try to remind people, which is not a bad idea, but it should be fairly cheap to do and effective. If it can't ,don't bother, people will get STIs or fat no matter what you do.

I think if somebody managed to get into Trinity they'd probably have enough gumption to know the benefits of wearing a goddam rubber.

Don't bring rag week into lecture halls. You have no business there. I hate when the student union do stuff like that. I hate when SU officer candidates come into lectures looking for votes. I don't even want the climps in the SU sending me their emails but I can live with that.

    Its not a literal thing i think/hope!

What's meant is its all about getting more people involved, whoever wants to, and if you dont clearly you wont be forced :P.

Like there's tshirts for people to wear and theyll do their own fund raising from friends etc so in that sense itll be in the lecture halls, youll see the tshirts and all that....there wont actually be half the ents crew storming in halfway through a lecture to grab moeny off everyone

Theres no point giving out here about the SU to be fair, youve gotta tell them or they cant change anything, email them and something might change!

Disagree. Seeing as they read boards, they can get the message loud and clear here.

Most people don't give a shit about rag week, don't force it down our throats.

These T shirts really erk me, how much of OUR money is wasted every year on wear-for-a-week tshirts? Re the student march?

I like the idea of an SU in theory but its far to undemocratic and cliquey to ever make much of an impact

To be fair, nobody is forcing anything down your throats. Firstly, if you didn't give a **** about RAG week, well you shouldn't have opened the thread. Makes sense, no?

Secondly, you're far more likely to get a response out of the SU by e-mailing them. They may read boards but you'd get your points across much easier and with more affect by e-mailing them directly.

What if you'd like to completely gut the SU? To strip it of nearly all of its functions and powers? Should I email the SU and let them know how I feel? Screw them, screw you, screw the SU and your pathetic political aspirations. Makes me sick.

John Mc Guirk once ran for SU President. End of story. Tells you all you need to know.

Mc Guirk is a pathetic hack, desperately climbing the greasy pole of political PR, hanging on to every new iniative in Irish public life, leaving his slimy mess on everything he touches. He's a really crap and transparant Mandelson.

i do believe the discussion was about rag week, no need to drag med day into it, which in fairness was for the most part not shoved down anyone's throat.

A topic on the TCD forum being derailed? How unusual.
bythewoods is being hypocritical in saying that rag week is being shoved down our throats-last year I didn't even know it as on until it was over. Med day, I was harassed every time I walked from lecture to lecture looking for money... I'll take rag week over that.

Fair enough, I don't have a problem with RAG week. Just don't agree that med day was as in your face as your experience of it was but I will agree that there was a minority of obnoxious and irritating people collecting for med day, perhaps you were just unfortunate with the ones you came across.

What makes med day extra annoying is that the hacks venture outside the college gates and harass citizens going about their daily business on the O'Connell Bridge, Grafton St etc etc. Talk about giving the college a bad name. We've enough beggars in Dublin.

I'M NOT USING MY BLACKBERRY FOR A WHOLE WEEK, GIVE ME MONEY.
    What an absolute sham.

Run for cover lads, Law Day seems to be coming up sometime in February...I'd say it'll be a case of replacing "blackberry" with "iPhone," and being done with it, tbh.

You mean people studying medicine? I don't see what hacks have to do with Med Day.
