Charging an iPad - how long?

I have my brand spanking new iPad charging for the past 10 hours and it is only at 77%. Is this normal? This is probably it's second charge.

Granted I am using it all day, on and off, but still, should it take this long?

Are you charging it off the wall or a computer?

    From the wall socket.

I did a test on this a while back and charged it from 1% to full on a dock plugged into mains with no use and it took 4hrs 25mins :)

    Mine takes a similar time.

The plug cools down when it's charged.

Nope, mine takes less than half that when it's under 10%

Are you sure you are using your ipad charger and not your iPhone charger? Different wattage.

Is it powered off or on standby?

    Bingo. That must be it.

I'll use the iPad one next time.

Yeah, I tried this a while ago and the iPhone charger takes about 3/4 times longer than the iPad one. And if you are using it at the same time it doesn't seem to charge at all.

I found that the first few iPad charges all took around 12 hours when I initially got it. Now it takes no longer than 5 hours but the battery life isn't as good as it was either.

You'd want to be careful about what charger you use. The iPhone one is good for 5 volts at 1Amp. Which is 5 Watts.

The iPad is 10 Watts (I think), so 5 Volts at 2 amps.

In essence a iPhone charger would take twice as long to charge an iPad. But you'd also be putting it under enormous strain. An iPad charger won't charge your iPhone faster but it would be better to use if you had the two available to you. You would be able to use the maximum amount of current to charge.
