So long as the LiveCD supports your network card, then there should be no problems.

if the wifi card is not detected automatically, may be an idea to connect using lan to get the drivers.

It can be hard setting up the wireless without a wired lan to kick start you and download the drivers. You shouldn't have to worry about the eircom broadband, all that stuff is taken care of in the netopia box and the lan and wlan is common to all operating systems.

If there is no drivers for your wireless card for Linux you can always use a solution called NDISwrapper which acts as a software interface betweeen Linux and the windows drivers. http://sourceforge.net/projects/ndiswrapper/files/stable/1.56/ndiswrapper-1.56.tar.gz/download

So you need to download the windows drivers for your card and extract them if you can, ndiswrapper needs to see the *.inf file.
Download ndiswrapper if it doesn't come with damn small.
Copy both to a usb key
Install dsl and then ndiswrapper, during the setup you should be asked for the inf file.
Google ndiswrapper and the make and model of your card for more detailed info

Nothing to do with the router ....... it depends on whether the livecd you are using has the required files in it for your hardware.

If it doesn't then try a different distro/livecd
