VW Golf 1.2 TSI 105 BHP versus 1.6 TDI 105BHP

Thinking of getting a new VW Golf Comfortline. Which is better: 1.2 TSI 105 BHP or 1.6 TDI 105 BHP?

I am kinda swayed towards the diesel because its in Tax Band A so lower tax. But the current Golf I have (1.4 petrol) has only 52,000 miles after 10 years! Did I read something before that a diesel has problems at such low mileage?

    Anyways, which is better?

EDIT: found some info. on www.whatcar.co.uk - says a diesel car isn't damaged by low mileage but if one doesn't do at least 15,000 miles a year, fuel/economy wise you won't make any savings on the cost of buying a diesel version. Seems to imply that the petrol version would suit me better.

At 5000 miles per annum you'd want a very good reason to go diesel.

Yeah have to agree there is no good reason to get the diesel IMHO. Wonder if the 1.4 TSI 122 is much more expensive? Would certainly be nicer to drive than either.

Vrt is based on co2 now so you have to do your sums. My 2.0 turbo diesel was 400 more expensive than the 1.6 petrol yet is 150 cheaper to tax.

With a modern diesel you do occasionally need to take it for a long run to regenerate the DPF.

€104 v €156 tax is not really a good enough reason to choose the diesel over the petrol imo. 5k miles per year is not diesel mileage, on modern diesels lack of use is not good for them, you could have potentially expensive repair bills if something goes wrong with it blowing away any small savings you think you might save at the pump. Also at 5k miles per year fuel costs are not really an issue.

Or something more powerful from a similar engine. I'm thinking 1.4 tsi 170, or for better tax, the fiat alfa 1.4 multiair 170 bhp for €129 tax.

    Petrol definitely.

Cheers for the replies. I am going go for the petrol.

I have a choice between the 1.2 TSI 85 BHP or 105 BHP. There's a €1,000 price difference. I don't do many miles in a year, most trips are in and around town, with the odd trip on the motorway. Do you think the 85 BHP would suffice? Or should I go for the 105 BHP?

(Yes, you have guessed correctly, non-car person here :D)

Think most people here would suggest the 105 BHP. I've never driven the golf with either engine but did have the use of a 75BHP 2005 model and it was dangerously slow. Definetely worth the extra grand for a car that will be much nicer to drive, will be more saleable in the future and will probably be better on fuel in the long run given that it won't be under as much pressure to move the considerable weight of the car.

It's all down to how you drive. Take both for a decent spin, then decide.

To be fair, even the 85bhp 1.2 tsi will be much much better than the neolithic 1.4. It has a turbo too which would help with overtaking. By all accounts though, go for the more powerful version. At this day in age, 85bhp just isnt enough in a golf sized car at this day in age
