ATM Issues - AIB ATM swollowed card

    Hi

Just like 15 minutes ago I was trying to get some money out of the ATM (AIB), and it did let me type in the code, I choose withdrawal and then it didn't work, there were some error message, some loading, and then it just said the ATM was out of function and it kept my card. But then it went back to normal in the sense that the screen became normal :(

I called the number it showed on the screen, but they said that the card would be destroyed automatically :( They said the machine couldn't recognize the card, but I have used that machine hundreds of times. And it did let me type in my PIN. I'm fearing it's a scam of some kind.

The issue is that I'm going home on wednesday, and the card provider isn't even Irish. It's a swedish bank, and that makes it harder to get a new card, especially before then :( And I absolutely need money. Yes, i got the ticket paid, but I'll have to get to dublin and to the airport etc. Plus I need money for food etc for the following days.

Any ideas what I should do? Could this be a scam? :( I'm fearing the worst.

    /John

It's not a scam. It's an error. They destroy the card if there's a malfunction like that. It's to protect them from a scam, in case the card is fake or damaged. You need to contact your bank immediately, cancel this card and order a new one. Then I would suggest you get your parents or someone you know to wire transfer you cash using Western Union or something like that. Failing that, in the short term, just ask a friend for a loan? If you're desperate for cash to buy food today then I'm sure a boardsie could help you out that lives near by. Good luck anyway!

What's that wire transfer you mentioned? Thing is, I need cash - I'm good for today and so, but it's going to be hard without it in the long run (especially when I'm going home). I think even if my parents (in Sweden) mailed me money, they wouldn't arrive before wednesday.

I called the ATM operations again and he said if I'm there early enough, the card won't be destroyed. The thing is, it could read the card at first because it allowed me to enter my PIN :(

This is exactly what I didn't need now. I got an assignment to focus on :(

http://www.westernunion.ie you get your parents to go to a western union in sweden lodge the money in your name and then when you go to a western union here in ireland you can get the money straight away

Good idea... just don't know where I'm going to find evidence that I live where I live :( I got a passport so that's fine, but I think they said you needed something more :( also there's no WU in Maynooth so I'd have to ask a friend or something to drive me to one.

Why do these things always happen to me!? :(:(:(

Western Union would not be the name of a shop. It's a facility for wire-transfering. Most internet cafes have the facility as immigrants use it to send money home. There are a good few places in Maynooth who'd do it. The place beside the Garda station I'd imagine for one. That's probably open late tonight.

Thanks :) Now the WU place in my hometown is closed for the night, but I'll ask mom to do a transfer early tomorrow. :)

Hopefully this will work out. Are these transfers hard to make? I can almost promise you no-one in my family has done one before.

You can transfer online with Western Union according to their website, your parents use their VISA / Mastercard and you collect at a Western Union agent.

I don't have three days, so we'll really have to hope this WU stuff works out.
