AKA "Rock 'Em Sock 'Em Robots the Movie" :D

    Synopsis:
Hugh Jackman plays Charlie Kenton, a washed-up fighter who lost his chance at a title when 2000-pound, 8-foot-tall steel robots took over the ring. Now nothing but a small-time promoter, Charlie earns just enough money piecing together low-end bots from scrap metal to get from one underground boxing venue to the next. When Charlie hits rock bottom, he reluctantly teams up with his estranged son Max (Dakota Goyo) to build and train a championship contender. As the stakes in the brutal, no-holds-barred arena are raised, Charlie and Max, against all odds, get one last shot at a comeback.

I have to say, I read the Richard Matheson story this is based on, and this sounds almost nothing like it (bar the basic "boxing robots" idea). I dont know why Hollywood keep taking inspiration from Mathesons stories and doing weird things to the story only to get stupid films, you think they would have learned with "I Am Legend" and "The Box".

    a) unbelievably shyte

Well we might get lucky and actually get to see 20foot robots kick the crap out of each other, unlike some other giant robot movies

Well, unless the robots are racial stereotypes with awful humour and with camerawork so sporadic that I can't make out a single thing then I'm not going! :pac:

Damn you, Rock 'Em Sock 'Em Robots! Can't we all just get along?

New trailer out for this. I prefer it way more to the first trailer which didn't really show the
    "a kid and his robot"
angle and looked a bit pants. Iron Giant meets Raging Bull?? :D

Alot of people are not going to like this but I didnt mind the trailer espically the 2nd one.

I like it, the newer trailer and this have actually gotten me a little excited about this. The first trailer that came out made it look like a different film altogether. There is another thread on this somewhere...... :-O

I can honestly say the trailer for this is up there with Rise of the Planet of The Apes in terms of 'What the **** Hollywood? Seriously?'

Words failed me when I saw it in the cinema. Rocky meets Rock 'Em Sock 'Em Robots!

With all these giant robots knocking around I'm hoping a Battetech movie is only a matter of time.

I must admit I think the new trailer looks worse if anything. At least the first trailer made it look like Rock 'em Sockem Robots: the Movie, so anybody who went to see it knew they were going to watch turdish drivel. The second trailer looks like turdish drivel trying to have a heart. Looks like someone made half of an uplifting father/son movie and someone made half of an over the top robot punch out movie. Then they mashed them together and hoped for the best.

If this was called "Rock 'm Sock 'm Robots", I would be a lot more interested in it.

Am I alone in wanting this to be good?
Two robots in a ring pummeling the slag outta each other!!!!

This film might actually succeed, where Transformers fails, and actually let you see the action

well just back from it and i have to say...

    .... i liked it !

i didnt know it was based on an old twilight zone episode writen by matheson.

its basically rocky balboa with robots with the emphasis in the kid and his da, and indeed parents and children if im fair, and second chances . in the ring and outside it.

its not gonna win any oscars but whist its a teensy bit dragging in places, its no micheal "go off for dinner for the first 90min and then come back in for the best part of the film" bay arse number.

the effects are good and its nice to see good ol animatronics in places too.

the film is more geared towards kids though, feeling in place like the closing act of the karate kid and films of the like. have to say i didnt expect it to be so emotional in places, near had the ol tears in the eyes at the end.

for a film that was really all about big robots kicking the shyte out of each other it has some surprising character development in it. jackmans character really is a bum at the beginning, and that FINAL bout against zeus was a real rousing set peice.

    i'd give it 7/10.

NOT fantastic, but not at all bad and a good way to spend an afternoon.

im tempted to give it a higher score as it really WAS alot of fun and i had my foot tapping along with the tempo of the last act, but i wanna reserve the upper 3 points for flilms like planet of the apes and the like and its not there.

    :)

It looks like Over the Top with the robot replacing Sly's thumb.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,721 ✭✭✭Otacon

Jackman puts in a decent performance but it's the kid's charm that actually wins. Their back-and-forth is what got me invested in the movie.

The effects are generally good and the action is well done. A 7/10 for me.

Just back from it. Pretty enjoyable 2 hours of escapism. The father son relationship was reasonably well done, although the kid was annoying occasionally. I also liked that they
hinted at the possibility but never really said whether Atom was sentient or not, I don't think he was but the kid inside me wanted him to be
. If I had watched this when I was 12 it would have blown my mind :pac:

Better than expected and plenty of fun but not a classic or anything.

    Perfect date movie :pac:

I know this is an old thread - but saw this for the first time last night, and even remember seeing the trailer for it last year and wanting to see it.

It is actually a good movie! Quite surprised by it, although at times he could have been a disney movie :)

Saw it on release, a real movie to choose because there was nothing else on worth seeing and, well, it was surprisingly good.
The robots were great, the kid was just on this side of not annoying and it left issues like the sentience of Adam to the viewer.
A well made, well acted film, great popcorn movie too.
