10k run timing

    Hi all. My username is get on your bike but Im getting off my bike & doing a bit of running also. I am aiming on my first marathon next october & have done a bit here & there but did my first 10 k run today, 5 of which was pretty steep. It was just over the 10km & I did it in 1 hr 02 mins. Just wondering what sort of time that is good, bad or indifferent. had to stop a few times as cars were not giving me much space.

    How old are you? Are you male or female?
    It's not good enough to win you any medals, not bad enough to see you come last in any races. Beyond that, why do you care?

    You have said it yourself you are only coming off your back. It will take time but you will see improvements just have patience. You have alot of time to build up to your marathon in october. This does not mean that you shouldnt start from now. Key is to build slowly you mileage. Strength is key and you will see your time drop majorly if you keep consistent. The only time you should worry about is how you compare to your last best time. As long as you are improving it is irrelevant comparing yourself to the people around ya

    Thanks for that. Im just going to get over the winter doing 10 k runs & building from there mw thinks. Want to do the w200 also so have to find a plan to suit

    with the right trainign no reason why you cant break 50minutes next year.

    I disagree with some of the comments that it doesn't matter where you come. I see the point, and agree you want to keep improving, but it's still important for lots of people.

    Anyway, probably <50 min would mean you are reasonably fit compared to the general 'recreational jogger' population.

    <40 min tends to separate the men/women from the boys/girls.

    Looking at the Jacinta O'Brien 10k (formerly Plassey 10k) ran earlier this year in Limerick - flat course, good conditions, about 300 runners of all levels - the median finish time was about 52 mins. The top 5% finished in <40 mins and the winner was 32 mins.

    Your 1:03 for the 10k is equivalent to about a 4:41 marathon time (go research what 'equivalent' means in this case!).
