Freeview in Ireland?

    Hello everyone,

Hoping someone can help me. Moved back to Ireland last year and immediately had Sky installed but have now decided it's time to save some money so I'm getting it disconnected.

Is it possible to get a freeview box which has all the Irish & UK terrestrial channels that has the capability of recording, pausing etc, like a sky+ box?
Someone has told me that if I finish with Sky the box will still pick up the terrestrial channels, is this true?

Or are there any better options I should look at?

I apologise for how basic these questions probably are but I have no knowledge of this kind of stuff and don't trust anyone in an electronics store to give me any genuine advice.

Apologies to anyone who does actually work in an electronics shop but I've had bad experiences before.

    Cheers

It depends on where you live for Freeview. If you are not within range of a UK transmitter then you wont receive it.

Freesat of course is another option. There are PVR's available for this. That will give you the UK terrestrials and so. You wont get RTÉ for free via satellite though.

RTÉ can be viewed with Saorview. This is the Irish version of Freeview and will give you RTÉ One, Two, TV3, TG4, 3e and RTÉ News Now. This is available in most parts of the country and requires a compatible tv or set top box.

    qu1nn7,

Have a look at the Terrestrial Forum - link below, most of your answers are there. Where are you located?

Thanks lads, I've actually re-posted this on the terrestrial forum on had much the same information.

I'm down in Kinsale so looks like a Saorview Box and maybe a Humax Foxsat PVR are they way to go.

Would you guys agree with that?

Yes I've had the Humax Foxsat HDR for about 18 mths now - it a great box, delighted with it.
I've actually ordered a Humax T2 HDR for Saorview reception, should arrive next week. Pricey, but as soon as I've tested it and am happy, UPC will be cancelled and box will pay for itself.
