The inquest into the death of RTÉ broadcaster Gerry Ryan has heard that traces of cocaine found in his system were the likely trigger to a cardiac arrhythmia that resulted in his death.
The inquest into the death of RTÉ broadcaster Gerry Ryan has heard that traces of cocaine found in his system were the likely trigger to a cardiac arrhythmia that resulted in his death.
A coroner said that Mr Ryan's heart was normal, but he said traces of cocaine were found in his system during toxicology tests carried out at Beaumont Hospital and at the State Laboratory.
He said that alcohol levels in Mr Ryan's system were nowhere near the level that would cause complications.
The coroner said the traces of cocaine suggested recent use of the drug. Questioned by Barrister Brendan Grehan, the coroner agreed that the levels of cocaine detected were 'low'.
Coroner Eamon Leann said the presence of myocarditis in Gerry Ryan's heart suggests previous use of cocaine, but he said it could also be as a result of a previous viral myocarditis.
He said the presence of myocarditis, which is an inflammation of the heart muscle, meant Gerry Ryan was at risk, and that even low levels of use of cocaine could have an effect.
He agreed with Coroner Dr Brian Farrell that the use of cocaine was a 'significant risk factor' in Mr Ryan's death.
Dr Eamon Leann, who carried out the post mortem examination on Gerry Ryan's body, said that cocaine is an unpredictable drug which does not have to be taken in high dosages to have a severe impact.
He said the presence of myocarditis in his heart suggested the possibility of previous drug use...........................

No wonder he didnt want to take a pay cut  (ok sorry too soon :o)

Hi JP, just heard on the news there that Melanie said she was shocked that he was taking drugs as he had made a "solemn promise" to her at the start of their relationship that he would not use drugs..

Morah said that her and the kids were proud to be his family, and left it at that..

Why are the Gardai not going to investigate who was providing Gerry Ryan with the drugs?

The corollary of this argument is that the Gardai won’t bother investigating who supplied drugs to Joe Blogs who dies a lonely death in some alley. If you’re going to investigate drug dealing then just do it, don’t wait for someone to die and don’t just do it for ‘celebrities’.

After reading the Sunday papers the person who is most responsible for Gerry Ryan's death is Gerry Ryan. Coke user since the 80's with Mark Cagney. Hard drinker, he liked his whiskey and knew full well the dangers of using so much coke and alcohol as his lectures from his radio show proved.

We were both in a restaurant in Dublin, a popular hangout for many pop stars. It was only days after I'd had printed in an Irish magazine my interview with Mark Cagney in which he'd first gone public on his heavy cocaine habit -- and Gerry suddenly approached me, clearly more than a little wired and aggravated, but smiling.

"Joe, why did you have to go and let Mark Cagney say all that ****?"

"Hi, Gerry, nice to meet you! What ****?"

"Him saying that he wasn't the only big name in 2FM who used cocaine."

"You yourself are an interviewer Gerry, you know it's not up to me to stop people saying what they want to say, or feel they have to say.

"Yeah, but you made the decision to print it. You could have cut out all that stuff."

"And why would I want to?"

"Because you and Mark Cagney should know better. You both should know that by putting that in print you could get a lot of people in trouble."

    "Like who, for example, Gerry?"

"F*** off, Jackson, you're not interviewing me now!" Ryan responded, laughing. "But you really should be more careful, Joe, that's all I'll say."

Nice to know where the Taxpayers money was going.

I'm surprised that there hasn't been more discussion online about this. If there is, I've missed it.

People get thrown in prison for not paying their licence fee, then this shower in RTE get paid more than Barack Obama, each Sunday shove their faces and glossy "lifestyles" down our throats via the Sindo to make us all feel like neanderthal paddywhacks, and now we're all supposed to shut up and say - and I quote Joe Duffy - that Gerry Ryan "harmed only himself", and it's a private matter???!!!

It's NOT a private matter. It's a public matter that requires addressing by RTE and the Gardai now.

And on top of that, apparently Gerry's "pals" are going to bail Morah Ryan out for fear she might lose her home. It would nice if Bono et al made a collective contribution to the thousands of unemployed people going to lose their homes to the bastard banks, rather than bailing out the pampered wife of a cokehead. And I'm growing tired of Morah Ryan's Jackie O meets rock chick schtick - I make no apologies. Her husband wasn't a heart surgeon or Stephen Hawking - he was a multi millionaire who made a career of blathering s**t to oul wans every morning funded by taxpayers but was then stupid and arrogant enough to blow the spoils shoving white stuff up his nose. I've lost everything due to the recession and after Xmas will be on 188 euro dole per week - why am I supposed to have sympathy for the Ryans?

And if the Irish public accept Lottie Ryan on their TV screens - her only reason for being there being RTE's conviction that the Irish public are so thick that they'll engage in collective mental masturbation each afternoon that a little piece of the Great One's DNA still walks the halls of Montrose (because talent it ain't) - then they deserve everything they get.

    F**kin furious. :mad::mad::mad:

And on top of that, apparently Gerry's "pals" are going to bail Morah Ryan out for fear she might lose her home.:

    Proposed scenario:

    1) Broadcaster on 500K a year, of taxpayers money, who can't manage his affairs, drops dead. Insurance company doesn't pay up because he was spending some of that salary on coke.

    2) House is under a mortgage. Family at risk of being turfed out.

    3) Broadcasters colleagues, who are also paid by the taxpayer, band together to help the dead broadcasters family.

    4) They take legal advice so that none of the money used to help the dead broadcaster's family, which was probably sourced in large part from the taxpayer, goes back to the taxpayer in the form of acquisition tax.

Essentially the taxpayer bails the Ryan family out. Also bear in mind that a large chunk of Ryan's salary was probably going to Morah anyway.

We're not talking about somebody who was on in or around the average industrial wage, had a few kids, a mortgage on a modest house.

500K a year and they still couldn't survive on it? Why should they get a helping hand when so many people, with much less disposable income in the first place, in a much tighter situation, are at risk of loosing their homes?

...but it's easier to blame G Ryan than suggest Morah was in part responsible, because he's dead and you can't speak ill of the dead.
