    gentlemen

got a 00 corolla 1.4vvti 113k with a small bang at the back when I go over a bump or pothole, tends to do it more so on rough roads at 30mph than on the main roads

is it the rear shock at end of life? it seems fine to me or what else is there at the back that could cause this noise

its definately suspension related rather than engine or transmission related judging by when the noise occurs

Much more likely to be a bushing rather than the shock.

Check the spare wheel and the spare wheel well.
Lots of things end up in that space and rattle.
Make sure the wheel is tightened down with the knob not loose.
Check the jack and associated stuff as well.
Then start looking at the rear suspension bushings and drop links.138952.png

Check anti-roll bar bushings (48818 on drawing). Cheap to buy and about 5 mins to fit. Also check anti-roll bar links (4883DD / 488OA ) for play.

These are the most likely suspects based on your description.
