    Looks like a road that will open up land for housing development to me. I'd say it's quite a long way off from being built.

    They need to resolve the issue of Limerick City's straitjacketed boundaries and their expansion before this happens.

    It will start ONLY if Limerick City Council are allowed throw 253 sets of traffic lights (AT LEAST) on it. It seems to be one of their current fetishes.

    Seriously though. Planning approval is nothing with a budget. Nobody should get their hopes up.

    This isnt going to happen, Limerick already has a pretty decent road network. There are more deserving uses for the money.

    Or a bypass in Charleville. Nothing outlandish. They could build an "Industrial Road" like what was built in Mitchelstown in advance of the M8.

    Surely the tunnel toll operator would have a severe objection to this road potentially taking revenue out of their hands. I can't see them giving a toll franchise and then building a road which bypasses it anytime soon.

    Yes I agree Limerick now has a decent road network, however, if anyone here is familiar with the northern Limerick city/Clare area, the Corbally road is a heavily congested route. It not only serves large suburban populations in the city, it also links large parts of county clare and, indeed, Tipperary with Limerick city. Traffic is chronic on this road. A connection between this road and the M/N7 is badly needed.

    It's quite annoying that even though UL has now expanded into County Clare, almost reaching the Corbally rd, no through access is allowed from the Clare side to the university. This necessitates a lengthy journey into the city centre and out the N7 to reach it by car. :eek:

    Preferred route corridor announced. Can't say anything bad about it to be honest.

    Well this is just phase 1 and given local opposition I don't think phase 2 will be a reality for a long time yet. I don't know about it becoming a bypass. You would have 7 or 8 roundabouts to navigate the entire route and at peak time I'm sure it would be much busier than the M7. Off peak it would be just as easy go through the city I'd say.

    The advantage of the existing southern route is that it opens up the Southern/Western route (as part of the Atlantic Road Corridor), without being that much longer (in terms of time) than a northern bypass.

    I don't know where your getting a 10 to 15 minute time saving from. From J27 on the M7 (Annacotty) to where the bypass meets the old N18 is 18km and only takes 10 - 12 mins to drive.
    As the crow flys the distance between these points is 14km so a northern bypass wouldn't really have been much shorter or quicker.
