    Hi,

I have a friend who works on a ship that has satellite tv. (gyro stailised) He has a sky box in his cabin, fed from the system. He is off to the states on said ship next year and was wondering aout receiving tv out there. He told me it's a 'SEATEL, coastal 24 system' supposedly able to work anywhere in the world.

He was wondering what type of set top box he could use on the trip, and indeed if he could get freesat or similar when in Europe. He said the dish can point at a number of satellites but the one they use for sky is the ASTRA.

If he connects a different set top box instead of his sky box, will it work?

This is the terrestrial forum. You would get a better reply in the satellite forum or the foreign satellite forum.

Title of the thread? Answer is "No".

Can he get Freesat or something similar in America? No, because (a) the satellite carrying what he is after will likely be below the horizon, and (b) even if the satellite could be seen, he would be well outside the footprint that even an enormous dish won't pull in signals.

He may be able to pull in feeds going Trans-Atlantic however, but these would be sporadic.

I'm sure they must have SOME free channnel in the land of the Free. Or is it all PayTV?

DirecTV needs a different LNB and set-box. But some does use same LNB
    You also need TV that works with 480i 30fps 60p / 525line, 720p 60 and 1080i 30fps 60Hz and suitable set-box.
