Recently bought a 2006 Ford focus estate ghia diesel 1.8 tdci 115 bhp, problem is I am only getting in or around 400 miles per tank, got it checked on a proper ford diagnostics computer and it is showing no faults,I serviced it last weekend, changed all the filters and added a fuel additive to a full tank of diesel but still no joy. There is no loss in power with the car, just poor fuel consumption.

Very pis..d off as ford say it should be doing between 600 - 650 miles per tank.

    Any ideas????

the cold weather will reduce your mpg. Heating and demisiter are big draws on the alternator.

    Check the tyre pressure too.

Would depend on the way you drive it as well.

    Short runs/long runs
    Heavy foot/feather light
    Gear Monster?

My 2.0 petrol car went down from 32 to 26 mpg on same 22 miles commute to work while driving slower and at constant speed.

if you are doing short runs with a cold engine, fuel consumption will be huge regardless diesel or petrol engine.

if you are sure there is a problem, heat up your engine and fill your tank in a station near to a motorway. Then drive for 40-50 miles without exceeding 100 km at constant speed and fill your tank again and see real life best consumption of your engine.

My wife drives this car and she is by no means a hard driver, ive noticed the poor mpg since before th start of the cold snap, checked tyre pressure too and all four are 32psi,hope its not down to faulty injectors.

Not to pick on your wife, but she might not be a hard driver, but it could be poor driving that leads to the low mpg.

But then again, it could be injectors. The best thing would be to take it yourself for a few days, and see if it improves.

Might just have to do that for a week or so,I drive a 2001 megane van myself and it does over 600miles to tank, not bad for a ten year old van.

you haven't mentioned what type of driving is done in the main .. city, rural, motorway, long / short trips etc ..... this has more than a significent effect on fuel economy.

the focus has a 53l tank, therefore the claimed range from Ford would give you about 51mpg. Getting 400 miles from the tank you are averaging about 34mpg.

The best method is to fill the tank to the brim. Drive for 100miles and then fill to the brim again, noting how much fuel you have to top up and get an actual MPG figure.

Live in the country so its mostly rural driving, spoke to a chap with same focus as mine 1.8tdci doing pretty similar to driving to what I am,and on a bad week he reckons he is getting 580 - 620 miles per tank.

yeah have 1.6petrol, having the same problem...

using up alot of fuel, can the average reader for Litres/100km be reset?

its annoying the ways its an average and not actual, then you can determine if theres a problem better.

trip computer measurements will never be accurate. Best to work it out yourself brim to brim.

Also, who started using miles/tank as a measurement of consumption? Thats a horribly innaccurate measurement. You should be thinking miles/gallon (or alternatively l/100km)

Noticed mine went from 5.7/100 in the summer to 6.1/100 in the Winter.

Some due to alot of start/stop driving with traffic etc.

My Cmax (1.8 TDCI) went down to 33 mpg, was told it should get up to 50 mpg.
In the end it turned out that the pressure pipe from the turbo to the air intake of the injection pump had burst.
Make sure the air intake for the filter is clean and clear, take your filter out, replace if necessary, check the pipes all the way from the air intake to the engine, any leaks there will cause smoke, poor performance and really hit your MPG, very important, because these pipes tend to go in Fords.
Also, any pipe that's ribbed, check very thoroughly, the crack could be hiding in one of the creases and be hard to spot.
