Purchasing a car warranty from 3rd party

Abit of a spin off from the Merlin thread but can I approach some 3rd party company and buy myself a 6 month warranty for my privately purchased car?
In the U.K I am certain you can do this...

Would be bloody handy if you could do that :)

    Thanks

Warranty direct UK do it here too. Dam hard to claim from them though.

Depending on the type of car, you might be as well to just set aside the cost of the warranty each year. You could end up with a nice few quid.

Ok thanks, I'm just interested to see what it's all about. Not that theres anything wrong with my cars but my new work runabout in an Alfa 156 and I am abit nervous about that, would do no harm in having some backup:D

Just make sure the timing belt is up to date and there should be no bothers..

There actually isn't that much that goes wrong on the 156. The suspension won't be covered by any warranty. If you keep the belts done and most importantly the oil topped up then you should be ok. The big ends go bang if you let it run low on oil so check it every single week!

But warranty direct do it anyway if you really want it.

I've seen a couple of references on Boards in relation to Warranty Direct providing cover in Ireland, which surprised me, as the last time I checked they didn't, so I just contacted them today. Here's the conversation:

Clive: Welcome to our Warranty Direct support chat. How can I help you today?
Me: I am in the Republic of Ireland - can I buy a warranty from you?
Clive: Good afternoon, unfortunately we don't have any garages in the Republic of Ireland
    Me: OK, thanks
    Clive: No problem

As I see there are a couple of issues with these type of warranties.
Firstly, as they are not bumper to bumper warranties, they often require engine striping to diagnose the actual fault. If they then decide the fault is not covered, you could end up with a big bill just for the strip down. Many garages wont even take on this work as there can often be dispute about payment as you would imagine.
Secondly, there are different levels of cover. Some of them only cover the failed component and not damage around the failed component. An extreme example of this would be the case of a failed timing belt tensioner. replacement of the tensioner is only a few quid (which they would cover) but the new engine that would be required due to the failure would not be covered. That is a very extreme case & many of the providers have moved away from this to cover resulting damage also but just to realise that you need to read the small print cause it is possible that a given policy could be pretty worthless.
