Laptop Repair/Advice

    Hi guys,

My girlfriends Windows XP laptop has gone a bit funny.

It was being used on a guest account the last few days by her folks, she just got back to it and signed into her Admin account to find everything on her hard drive missing. The C: drive is saying there's still 64gb used, so everything is there, just not visable/findable/usable.

Has anyone had any experience of this before? Is it best send it into a repair place?

And if so, any recommendations to get it fixed up in the Dublin/Wicklow area?

    Thanks in advance!

Chances are the user profile is damaged. Check the Documents and Settings folder in the C drive and see if there's multiple folders with similar names, for example, Admin and Admin.PC1 (just examples here). One of these folders should still have all her personal data but it will be a case of digging it out.

As to why the profile is damaged, could be anything from user hive corruption to a failing hard drive.

Time of year / cosmic rays / etc.

You may have to right click on the folder , security and take ownership

Cheers guys, I think she's going to send it in and get checked out tomorrow evening, hopefully it'll be something simple-ish and not the HD failing :-/

unlikley to be the hdd unless it's making funny noises

use the built in diagnostics or hdtune to check the drive yourself

or get a linux live CD to browse the drive , it doesn't care about windows permissions

    +1

OP a repair shop could be costly. Considering the data is still on the drive you should follow Capt'ns advice :)
