    Lads,

    Just a quick reminder in case any of you missed it; Wheeler Dealers is on tonight on the Discovery Channel at 9 o'clock and in this particular episode they feature the 840 coupe. It's one of the better episodes.

    Better to watch it on demand, and besides, you can skip over Brewer's hideous leering grin and awful cliches to the good bits.

    Anyone else notice that when Ed sits into the car to test the aircon, the display pops up that it needs brake pads.........yet its never mentioned in the show. So either they didnt change them, or they just didnt show it or factor into the end cost. :confused:

    On a side note; What a car!! :D
    We had one in work a while ago and I loved driving it! (Was a nightmare to stop though!:eek:)

    I notice they're now doing a sort of Wheeler Dealers revisted thing. I just happened to come across it the other night on Discovery Real Time where they were revisisting an E24 6 Series they did a few years back.

    cool: I just watched all 5 episodes on YT - great !

    And then at the end - an Irish buy called 'Kevin' buys it, to bring it home ?

    Ok Kev - stand up and be counted - we want to hear all the bits the show didn't show us !!

You don't want to acknowledge that as truth because, deep down in places you don't talk about at the Green Party, you want me on that road, you need me on that road. We use words like freedom, enjoyment, sport and community. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent instilling those values in our families and loved ones. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the tax revenue and the very freedom to spend it that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”

    Yeah, I saw the words "Brake Linings..." in red and was wondering if they were going to put new pads on.

    Depends on the uploader, it could be in HD which would look better than a non-hd TV broadcast.

    I kinda meant it usually isn't in HD for TV shows. Deliberately I assume.

    Good episode last night; I've seen it before, but it is one of the better offerings from Ed & Mike. Car was bought by an Irish fella too. Wonder if he still has it?

    Could you be confusing the brake pads wear symbol with the handbrake symbol? Its easily done, or did it actually say the words itself.I cant see it properly.

    No the words "Brake linings..." pop up on the display in the centre console (around where the radio would be). You can see it if you look carefully when Ed sits into the car.
    Skip to 3:50 in this video and you can see it. The video is a little dark and kinda hard to see but you can definately make it out. Its only there for a split second though.

    That could have been a sensor misread or disconnected/damaged wear sensor, as opposed needing new Pads. Note I didnt actually watch the show.

    Should try out an 850 or 850CSi then, the 840s are called "4 Shorts" in E31 land... :D

    Id be interested in driving both and seeing which is better, sometimes having the bigger engine isnt always a good thing!

    Bear in mind I mentioned 3 cars there, not 2.

    840 = V8 4.0 or V8 4.4l both 286bhp 'ish
    850 = V12 5.0 300bhp or (not in UK and IRE) V12 5.4 322bhp
    850CSi = V12 5.6 380bhp (though mine is dynoing at 391bhp)

    While the "official line" is that the 840 and 850 (not CSi) are on par performance wise as the weight difference just about makes up the BHP loss, the reality is (US buyers have plenty of options) the 850 is meant to drive a lot nicer with its extra torque and is very easy tunable to 340bhp. The 840 is a better candidate for a supercharger but its still the economy model.
    On a track the 840 may pip the 850 (the original 5.0) but on the actual road, probably not. There is also something to be said to having a V12 engine.
    Note the V12s arent nose heavy, even they maintain a nice 52:48 balance.

    The 850CSi comes with a lot more wallop (BHP and TQ), a proper 6sp manual gearbox (vs the 4 and 5 speed slushboxes on 99% of the above), custom suspension, oil and diff cooler, LSD (none of the above have LSDs) and of course standard rear wheel steering (AHK).

    I test drove 2 840s then a tired and unloved CSi. I left with the CSi (and obviously got it back to fighting strength).

    It would be interesting none the less to put them on a track.
    I have an ongoing challenge from someone (who doesnt yet own this vehicle) to track race a 2004 Ford Lightning (ie a "truck"). Doesnt seem to matter to him thats the 850CSi is effectively 20years older than the Ford so any victory (if even possible) would be quite shallow.

    Interesting thanks for the info, I didnt realise any of the 8`s came with a manual box that changes things. Would love to take a tired one and turn it into a track weapon.

    Apparently the 850CSI was a world first production for a V12 mated to a 6 speed manual.

    I must say though that the 4 speed auto on my 5.0 is very nice if a bit slushy as MattS states.

    Let me guess a Ford Lightning has a big V8, solid rear axel, no LSD and weighs as much as the QE2? You would murder it in the twisty stuff.
    380bhp V8 Supercharged, solid rear axle all right but has an LSD, weighs 2120 (vs 1970kg on the 850CSi)... I dunno, what I read online makes it look very good, but hard to know in comparison to what. The Autobox makes for a slightly faster 0-60 than the CSi (and I wouldnt want to wreck my gearbox) but presumably eats away via drivetrain loss and "hopefully" dodgy gear changes.

    The videos Ive seen of the ones with Wokkes chips (for the box and the engine) actually do look good. They can hold a mental high speed per gear.
