I've noticed a growing trend-especially among women to have their phones on speaker and holding them about 6 inches away from their faces believing that it constitutes having a hands free set.Crazy thinking as virtually all the phones owned by people now have bluetooth and an earpiece is only about €15 these days.Even worse is doing it driving in the snow and ice..was going to post the thread title as 'what's your idea of hands free' but thought better of it being in AH.;)

My opinion of hands free would be using voice control while your hands are on the steering wheel/brake/gear stick.

Worked with a guy who used to shove the phone under his hat to hold it in place while driving and a guy lives near me who drives with no seatbelt and is constantly on the phone, thats just plain stupid.

I have a phone boy from Tajikistan, he screens the calls.

He's as handy as a small pot.

I think some cars have a brake that you operate with your hand when parking. I can't remember what it's called.

Do you get this phenomenon in Ireland where people park their cars in the middle of roundabouts to make/take phone calls? It's something of a trend over here, absolutely insane. I think a hands-free set might be a safer option in fairness.

Ah just putting it on loud speaker is fine, you can still steer with the phone in your hand

While I tend to agree, that's not what people do. They end up going, "What, I didn't hear you? What? What? OK, hang on a sec..." whereby they hold the phone just below their chin so that the person on the end of the line can hear you.

The main reason that most people use the speakerphone is not because they think that it's "handsfree" but because it's less obvious to the Gardai that you're speaking on your phone if it's down below the window level.

I'm starting to think more and more people are going nuts these days, people walking down the road who appear to be roaring at themselves or having a conversation only to just about spot an ear piece as they walk by, most of the time anyway..

Had a woman in an Audi A4 in traffic behind me today with the usual pose of i-phone held 4 inches away from her face while going through paperwork, how the hell can you concentrate on the road while doing that?

I really need to get one of those handsfree kit things. At the moment I just put the phone in my lap while shouting at it.

I tuck my mobile in between my seat belt and my shoulder when taking calls, works a treat and my two hands are free for driving, taking notes etc.

My idea of hands free phone use is having the phone up to your ear as usual until you see a cop!

I've seen people using wired hands-free sets holding the phone in one hand and the mic up to their mouths with the other, so they are in fact using two hands with a device that is supposed to allow them to use their phone without either. Technology is wasted on some people.
