Tax Relief for Union/Teaching Council fees abolished

Tax relief for trade union subs and membership fees for organisations such as the Teaching Council have been abolished from 2011 onwards in this budget.

Is there any point in teachers lobbying the ASTI, TUI, INTO and Teaching Council to have such fees reduced? I for one know that E90 a year for the TC and E340 a year for the ASTI are sums of money I would definitely like to see reduced, given my lower income for next year.

    What do people think?

I think it should at least be suggested? It's a lot considering how little the T.C. actually do. What exactly do they do again? Oh yes...regulate our profession...

I brought up the suggestion that union dues be reduced in line with our salaries last year at a meeting with one of our (TUI) assistant general secretaries and I've actually forgot what fudge of an answer he gave me, suffice to say it was negative.

The heads of our unions are paid in line with senior civil servants in the Dept of Education and I wonder if they have taken a pay cut:rolleyes:

It's something that I for one will bring up at the next meeting when I get back.
