Painting old wooden kitchen cupboards

Hi I was just wondering if anyone had any advice re painting wooden cupboards in the kitchen. We are renovating an old house and the kitchen cupboards are sound except for the colour. I was thinking of painting them cream and putting new handles on them. I was also planning to replace the old counter top as it is marked/burnt/and lifting. Does anyone know where I'd get a good price on one in westmeath/offaly/roscommon areas?

Depends on what finish you want. Some people still want the grain of the wood to come through, some people want them to be flat like metal panels. If you want the wood to have it's grain show through, just use a neutral undercoat colour, and then paint. If you want it smooth, a high build primer, sand that flat with some 800 wet and dry paper wrapped around a cork block, then paint.

If possible, I'd always recommend lacquering them afterwards with a Matt Lacquer, but if you use paint designed for the task, you won't have to. Did a few wardrobe doors recently for a furniture shop who'd had them damaged in transit, and it should be an easy DIY job I think.
