Well $ky just keep on ripping off the Irish customers!

Just got an email informing me that my mobile sub was to increase in January from €7 per month to €10 per month a 43% increase!

The uk sub goes from £6 to £8 a 33% increase!

When you convert to Euro the Irish customer is paying over 50c more! Ok not alot in the grand scheme of things but no reason to charge the Irish customer more never mind the increase.

Having got rid of $ky in July for Freesat (no regrets) it is bye bye on my iPhone too!

It's a total rip. I can see loads of Irish ditching it. It went up by £1 in Britland and €3 in Rip-Off Republic.

I did have it and was thinking of re-subscribing in January but I won't bother now.

That's right. Don't complain about anything. Ever.

I'm actually a big fan of sky's regular tv service. There isn't a better one out there and it's decent value too. But the iPhone sports service just isn't worth €10 and bumping the price of anything by 43% can never be justified.

There is jak, its called freesat and its free. Buy a HD Combo box for basic services. No bills. They can put it up 430000% and guess what it costs then. Yep. Still zero.

What's the point in watching sport on a mobile phone? Tiny screen and not worth paying for.If you have time to watch it on a phone you surely have time to watch it on tv.
To the fta fans-very hard to carry a dish and freesat box around in your pocket. Not good to make calls or text with either.:D:D

People who watch tv on their phones have very small eyes.

    True.

Have to get a dish replaced as was damaged by snow
They told me it would be 100 euro to replace. It costs 65 Sterling in UK for same thing, convert that to Euro is only 77
    Rip off indeed

I don't trust people with small eyes or ones that are too close together.

So you pay for a service which they can't provide due to damaged equipment and you have to pay for the equipment to be replaced ?

You own the dish and satellite once you've had it for a year I think. You wouldn't expect Eircom or your mobile phone provider to replace your handset if they got broken and you couldn't use their service.

If they provided me with the handset I would. If I own it after a year and have been paying for 5 years surely I've built up credit for 5 boxes and dishes by now!

I think they let you have it after a year so the responsibility is yours if it breaks.

You own it all from day 1.

It's just that contract to get Pay TV is minimum of a year.

Any Guarantee, sale of goods act etc is not going to cover accidents or deliberate damage (Lightning, dog eat it, snow, flooding, shooting it because Liverpool won/lost etc).

Quite often though Sky does supply replacement refurbished boxes, new boxes or subsidised repair to subscribers, especially the longer you are one or the higher the package. But they are not obliged to. It's not the same as Cable TV, which you never own the box and has no free channels.

You own it from the offset, there's a 12 month warranty.Good analogy with the phone providers. You're paying for the service every month, not the equipment. If you install your own system and it breaks down after a year do you complain to yourself about having to fork out to repair it? The guys fixing it are not a charity-they have to pay for fuel, tax etc. to get to your property and carry out services.

It's not a great analogy because with a phone co you can get equipment from anywhere. Sky is a closed shop and you have to get their equipment.

Bottom line is I'm paying them around a grand a year for the service for the last 7 years. If they want to nickel and dime me over a box that costs them about 20 quid I'll get my tv elsewhere.

I just got Sky recently after being stuck with SmartVision's awful service for the last couple of years. I'm probably in a honeymoon period, obsessively recording all kinds of stuff I'll never watch. I'd imagine I'll check out the freesat route when my contact expires next year but I'm in an apartment so I don't know if I can tap into the communal Sky dish with a freesat box.

The Skybox can pick up all the free channels anyway without a card, even if you do replace it nobody will be any the wiser regards hooking it up to the dish, the cables are already in situ in your place.

Can you? I must try and get an iPhone 4 in Dunnes. All you need do is point out to Sky how much you paid every month for the past 7 years and I'm sure they'll sort you out.

Sky HD box a lot more than €20

Considering they are a UK company, paying UK VAT, only real overheads here are the vans on the road.

You would have thought the government here would have been chasing sky for their 100m a year VAT thats leaving the country?

They're still providing the service, they never stop providing the service, equipment is warrantied for 12 months. You own it from day one.
There's a lot to be gained from reading the small print before you sign a contract.

So by that logic, I should have enough credit with bord gas to not have to pay them next month for this months heating??
Might drop into Top later too as I've been using their diesel for over 10 years in my vans.

If bord gais gave customers a boiler every time they signed up for 12 months of gas I would expect a new boiler if it breaks after a few years

If top gave you a van in exchange for buying their diesel for a year, I'd expect a new van after a few years.

    Next!

I'll say it again in case you missed it..
    12 month warrenty = 12 month warrenty.
It isn't a licence or voucher to receive new equipment after a prolonged period of time.

you could always get yourself a slingbox and download the slingplayer mobile app, then watch your satellite box from home over the internet? :o

Call them to cancel. They will probably replace your equipment.

Sorry to hijack the thread but this kinda ties in with the mobile phone service-I signed up online for Sky Player as it stated it was free but the description of free is a bit vague on the site-in a nutshell I don,t want to be hit with a €15 per month charge for a service that in fairness I've used twice.Couldn't find an option to cancel it on the site either.I have Sky World as my tv package but the wording on the site as to how it mirrors your package and charges are as clear as mud.

It's very handy for on the go if you dont want to miss a match. And at home I can play it through my TV and paying 7e a month is obviously a hell of a lot cheaper than subscribing to Sky Sports.

€10 a month is a bit too much to justify though, I think I'll stick to watching on the comp when I need to see a match now. Cancelled.

Ditch your iPhone, get an Android and watch it for €6 on O2 TV - cheaper than the €7 you were paying!

Nah, then i'd have to put up with a poorer OS with rubbish overall app quality, but I guess thats another argument :D

    Sopcasts ftw.

This just isn't true. I have Sky subs and got rid of Sky equipment years ago.

    * I don't want this to be jumped on about it may violate Sky Terms and Conditions, I am just stating that you don't, technically, need Sky equipment to view Sky.
