Do you believe in other Intelligent life?

This isn't a conspiracy theory thread, just want some peoples opinions.

I believe the universe is just far too large for us to be the only intelligent life, I could almost go as far as saying it's impossible. Stephen Hawking said somewhere recently that he believes it's "almost impossible" for there not to be.

    So, what do you think?!

Do you believe there's intelligent life somewhere else in the Universe? 82 votes

we are the centre of the universe and anybody who thinks differently will suffer Gods wrath

There's as much possibility that we're smartest organisms out there or down in score board with the other dregs of universe society :pac:

I assume there's "aliens", of course, to say otherwise would be like walking into a warehouse and saying "there's no germs here".

    Aliens or intelligent life?

The odds of alien life not existing somewhere in some form are negligible, given the recent discoveries of a number of planets within the habitable zone of their stars.

Intelligent alien life is something else entirely, but our existence tells me that wherever life has spawned, intelligent life is also likely to have evolved.

As seamus said, intelligent life is what we're really looking for.

I reckon there's almost certainly aliens out there. Don't think we'll ever meet them though.

And given that the revised theory of a continually renewing and co-existing universe, means there are really ancient civilisations and they certainly visited us, if not even began mankind on earth.

As the universe continually expands, losing contact is an inevitable consequence. Any encounters are likely to long lived affairs rather than short visits.

Of some sort of course. Could be tiny organisms, humanoids, furry little forest creatures, big blue things with slime..

The Universe isn't very big at all, it's all smoke and mirrors.

No I don't "believe". I do think that the chances are that it's highly likely.

Don't know about that! See the hint lies in both Bible stories and mythology that the Gods, Angles and Aliens were fascinated by earth women and found them unbearably attractive.

Now, not saying our women are not attractive, but what does that imply about the alien women ...... ?

If the latest theories about "bubble" universes and multiple dimensions are anywhere near right, then the universe is infinite and the number of mini-universes within it are also infinite. It has been suggested that in fact every possible scenario of life including an infinite number of variations of our own exist somewhere in other dimensions.

In case anyone has not grasped the significance of that, it means that there are infinite versions of the two Brian's busy fecking up an infinite number of economies. That might be the outcome of intelligent life anywhere in any dimension. It grows to a point and then deteriorates to a level where any further development of intelligence is stifled. In that state the intelligent life becomes dominated by lawyers and gradually regresses.

So there. Can I now have my PhD?:p

I'm not sure if I believe there's intelligent life on this planet yet to be honest, let alone other planets.

Meanwhile, here in Ireland, we found the Angles just unbearable, and did our best to feck them out.

P.S. Who wrote the bible? Hint: wasn't God, Angels or aliens.

Angles? Were they right angles? Did we defy Pythagoras? If so no wonder we are in deep s**t and the construction industry is banjaxed.:o

No evidence of such, hence I dont believe.

Maybe it's a rationalization solely based on our own conceits and hopes.

I don't think intelligent life exists on this planet never mind "out there".

    Angle, angel.

Tripped up again. This is becoming a habit of mine. Good quip in the reply. Funny. :)

If we do find life in the universe, its highly unlikely that they we will have similar levels of intelligence. They will either be small microbes or we will appear to them as small uninteresting microbes.

Its very unlikely that there isnt life. The universe is just too big for it not. Our solar system is like a grain of sand in the Sahara.

Yes, there are 1000's of intelligent species scattered across the universe. Probably millions, or even billions.

I've a think about this too. I've a small tropical fish tank, I've a good sized yellow angel fish and sometimes I get transfixed with its stares, I have uncontrollable urges to lift the lid, get the fish flakes and drop some in.

With a splash from the fish I'm released for his spell.

    Absolutely convinced of this now.

Don't you mean smokes and daggers? :)

Apart from Bertie Ahern, who lowers the average intelligence of our solar system by a measurable amount, there are some very smart people who regard the search for extra-terrestrial life-forms as being a matter for serious science rather than just belief.

If you have a decent research proposal, NASA Astrobiology department might even give you some funding. Travel expenses to Gliese 581g not included.

Until we find life outside of this planet the answer is no, or at least we can't know. You can't extrapolate from an example of one, no matter how big the odds appear to be. Clearly this planet can support life. The stuff is everywhere. Yet life has only emerged once in one form on this planet and all life we've ever found on this planet is related. If life kicks off so easily as it did here, then why not slightly different forms? It could be a massive almost infinitesimal fluke even in a vast universe. Or it could mean that life can only start and be like the life we find here. No weird silicone based life forms etc.

On intelligent life, you could also argue that we alone. Well in this galaxy anyway as we see no evidence of either current advanced intelligence out there or the relics of same. If we dont off ourselves in thermonuclear madness and survive and advance for the next million years chances are very high we'd set off to look around. This earth is quite young so you would think previous civilisations have done this, but we havent found them yet.

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.
