Just looking for some advice here on where i can go from here.

I'm currently doing a Fetac Level 5 course in Sound Engineering, once i have the course complete, and where can i go from there? Do i apply through the CAO to go on further?

Yes, you apply through the CAO. You need to look up individual colleges' prospectuses to see what the requirements are for FETAC holders. There are two ways to progress onto third level:

    1. Some courses reserve a (very limited) number of places for FETAC applicants under the Higher Links Scheme. They take the best so you'd need all distinctions.

    2. Some colleges and courses will allow you to convert your module results into points under the Pilot Scheme.

All the info is here and your Guidance counsellor should be able to help you out, though I'm surprised that your college hasn't gone through this already.

Just one word of warning re looking at progressing options - only deal in award codes and the module numbers and not in the titles as there is no FETAC award in Sound Engineering - it maybe that you are doing the FETAC Award in Media Engineering or Media Production so you are better off quoting the award codes etc and not the names of courses. The following steps may help you in applying for a place via progression.

    1. Access CAO website and click on FETAC Information.
    http://www.cao.ie/index.php?page=scoring&s=fetac

    2. Open the document in Deemark's post since you will require this to put a name to the codes that are used for entry requirements. This explains the FETAC system and the scoring system. There are two methods used by the IoTs and the Universities for calculating the points but don’t get too caught up in that at this time as there is only one way to apply regardless of which method you are having your results assessed under. Its the IoTs and colleges that decide which method to use to assess your application based and that is based on whether it is an IoT or an University you are applying to and it has nothing to do with you or your course.

    3. To find the courses you can or want to progress to and establish the relevant FETAC link go via the FETAC section on the CAO page http://www.cao.ie/index.php?page=scoring&s=fetac click on FETAC entry requirements and select the college you wish to progress to and if there is a FETAC link it will be shown here. The FETAC award code that you need to use to enter the course is listed by letters e.g. DCHSC etc. Within each award some colleges will require you to have specific modules and these are usually listed by code i.e. G20001 etc. An award without the necessary modules will not qualify you to apply for entry.

    4. Remember your college may use titles other the FETAC award code and module names for their courses. Contact your Career Guidance person or Tutor and establish that they are offering the right award and combination of modules that you need. FETAC courses differ from college to college in terms of the modules they offer. Ask for the module codes (Do not rely on the names of the modules or subjects as there are several versions available of similar sounding modules).

    5. Places for FETAC applicants at IoTs and Universities are limited and this is an extremely popular route so expect intense competition and don’t assume that you will qualify for place with the min. entry requirements. For example with FETAC Nursing you will have to scoring max distinctions in your FETAC award to be considered for a place and then you will be subject to random selection for a very limited number of places.

    6. Ask your Career Guidance Office for assistance in completing the CAO form. You will be applying via the CAO as normal but completing the FETAC sections.

Thanks for all the help folks!

The college hasn't really said anything to me about progression, we missed quite a few classes this year due to the weather, so they might be more concerned about everyone catching up at the moment!
