    Hi Folks,
I had the bathroom and ensuite knocked into one and completely redone, ever since , hairline cracks are appearing in the walls downstairs and also when the tap in the kitchen is turned on first thing in the morning, there is a loud banging sound coming from the attic. I have lagged all the pipes in the attic and made sure they are secure but I just can't figure out what the cause of the banging is. Is it normal for cracks to appear in walls or could there be something more serious going on?

    Any thoughts appreciated.

    Re; Hair line crack.
Just wondering if you had replastering/ repainting.
Is the house just drying out.
Is the heating on longer and warmer than usual.( Considering the weather we are having).

There may have been some load/ weight from the roof/ attic bearing on the old wall and this weight may have been transfered to another wall.....

    Re: Kitchen tap.
This is directly feed from the mains. The mains is also going to your tanks.
When you are opening and closing the tap you are getting water hammering. (Air and high pressure water).
Quick fix / might work: You can modify mains in attic to incoroprate a short lenght of pipe that will cushion the hammering.
Ideally fitting an anti-hammering device in attic is the best option.... but haven't seen one on sale here.

Can you take pictures of the cracks...

Describe the walls they are on...

    Inside outside...

Describe in the picture where above the room the old dividing bathroom wall was..

    As much detail as possible

Hi folks thanks for the replies and sorry for not getting back to you sooner :o

Had someone look at the walls and he said it was a combination of banging and hamering etc when the work was being done and also having the heating on full blast all day during the cold snap all contributed to hairline cracks....PHEW!

Plumber says we need different size orifice for ballcock(?) in attic tank and that should stop the hammering sound. Fingers crossed eh!

    :)
