As we all know for the next few months, we will be promised the sun moon and stars by every political party bidding for our votes in the upcomming General Election. their opinion polls, surveys and focus groups will pin point devisive opinions and cracks in the irish people, and the camps will exploit these to win out votes by promising to protect our intrests and represent our issues.

Then, the moment the last ballot is counted, the selling out process begins. parties forming governments, trade and sell out on key issues for many reasons:

    -they have higher priorities
-they trade policy points for front bench ministries
-they have not enough seats but are desperate for a pension, a nice car, and the hope of a chance to make a decision or two.
-they were lying in the first place to get votes
-they have no legal agreement or obligation to keep their word

The one lie all canvassing politicians tell is that is that they are honest selfless individuals without a personal agenda or personal ambition. They know that when they are elected, thay have a mandate for the next few years, to do whatever they want, unless they completly feck up and the government collapeses.

There is a hole in democracy here, where after an election, the people are powerless oust a government who fails to deliver. I think this election will be worse. We are in hard times and have little resources to deliver anything that is promised.

    How can this be fixed?

-Replacing the Shannad with an x-factor style public retification system for all Bills passed by the Dail?

-Requesting that the next canvassing Politician at your door sign a legal agreement, stating that he/she will vote in favour of all bills relating to [insert promised topic X here (e.g. reducing politicians wages)], and that failure to so so will result of half of the funds/assets of that candidate be transferred to [charity/electorate/individual voter/whatever]

-Doing away with Human politicians altogeather and replacing the Dail itself with a series of boards.ie polls and having a single civil servant (DeVore perhaps) implement the will of the people in realtime.

The Lib Dems have done so, dropping the only two policies that got them votes in England.

Wait until FG get in, everything they said so far is half truths. They are lying through their teeth and will increase tax and have higher job losses than this state has ever seen before.

Nobody will realise until next year and they are in power, like the Lib Dems in England.

Look at them now, their getting death threats and violent daily riots in England. A sign of what is to come in Fianna Gael are voted in.

Please provide some evidence to back this up.

It's quite obvious really, we've seen it all before. They are very similar to the Lib Dems with their under handedness and lies.

We'll only really see it when the misinformed vote them in and we have to suffer the fate and consequences of misguided voters.

do you get 50c for asking that? evidence? it's a fact of life, all politicians lie to get elected. even FG ones ;)

The Question I was asking is what can be done to fix this situation and make politicians (yes, even those saints in FG) adhere to their promises?

Irish politics are mostly irrelevant to me. But in this discussion forum, we tend to try to keep things on the "reasonable discussion" track, so if you are going to say definitively that something will happen, I will ask you to back up your assertion with evidence of some level.

So again I ask, provide EVIDENCE (not opinion).

Quite frankly, the greatest problem with politics is people who don't give other parties a chance.

The mantra "they are all the same" is all very well in theory, so long as there is actual evidence of this.

In this case, the same party has been in power for what? 13 years? There is no record for which you can effectively judge opposition parties in government.

You can only ever judge the recent government and as an outsider looking in, quite frankly, they do not appear to be a good option for your country.
