I just want to know if anyone can find out whether or not you are signing on for the dole? I know its no shame nowadays but I'd rather not have anyone find out. I am on a placement at the moment and i think people just presume I'm being paid (albeit a meagre sum)

You are not on the dole. You are on WPP. People could find out if your boss lets it be known.

Again, you are not on the dole. You are working. Also, people seem to think this is free for employers - it's not. FAS require insurance, and this can cost up to e1000/year. This stopped my small one-man company from offering a software engineering WPP position (that would have given candidate unreal experience).

Ah **** it im only codding you!as far as i know nobody can find that info out.the only people u have to worry about are your nosy neighbours beside the post office or maybe inside in it!the best thing you can do is go in with post or something like that every time you want to collect your dole.that will deceive the onlookers.:)

Lads, while I tend to agree with you personally about not caring what others think, what's been said here is not actually all that helpful to the OP. To have been on WPP, s/he must have been signing for 3 months anyway, and even though he's working voluntarily, he is still signing rather than being paid a wage for the job.

OP. Your boss, and the HR/payroll people know. The latter should lose their jobs if they ever tell how much anyone is/isn't paid, and in my experience they tend not to leak. But they do sometimes get confused and put reports in odd places on shared drives or similar, so you can't guarantee that others won't find out. There may be some IT people who have to fix the payroll people's computers who can see, but generally they'll have more interesting things to think about. And some perceptive colleagues may pick it up from the way the boss treats you.

In terms of people finding out in the future that you were signing: they shouldn't (assuming that they never get a job where they'd have access to your welfare records). But you can't 100% guarantee it. Things could go wrong, papers could be accidentally dumped, computer data hacked, a staff member from the dole office could meet you socially somewhere and accidentally say something that let the cat out of the bag. At home, I'd guess it's a 99% guarantee. Not sure about here, but I think it's lower. And you need to remember that they might get a job where they have official access, one day. You just never can tell.

Thanks very much for your kind responses. I assume Gardai, people in Revenue can find out ones personal details anyway.

I guess I mean in a bank situation or applying for mortgages etc, with a future partner or anything, could a situation ever arise where you have to declare the fact that you signed on in the past?
