Ok so I finally got to take my first car out for a spin (bad weather prevented me taking it out).. So I was driving slowly in first gear & used the clutch to slow/ control the car.... My bf said that wasn't allowed & that it was coasting. (he said he does it at times but he's not sure if it's allowed in the test) I am almost 100% certain my instructor said this was ok to do in 1st gear (and maybe 2nd) to control the car.. ie if you're in the city & people are walking in front of you etc. Please help!!

It sounds fine to me, coasting is rolling along in neutral or with the clutch in.

So it's ok to control the car at a low speed then? But not to drive along with clutch down? So sorry I tend to take everything my instructor says literally! I don't want to form a bad habit straight away!

Very Basicly: If you are creeping along in 1st at about 5kmh it is good acceptable clutch control. If your speed is in double digits or you are in 2nd or above it would be coasting.
An exception would be when you have slowed down to stop.
