Ive applied for loads of these in the last few weeks, anything vaugely science related and a good few that would have been perfect for me and that I would gladly do for free, havent heard a peep.

Is there high demand for them do you think? I know theres high unemployment obviously but judging by the tone of the WPP threads a lot of people seemed to be happier on the dole applying for paid positions.

there are 2,000+ people doing WPPs or have done one at this stage ( anyone who has done a WPP will know how I know this ;) )

    I'm one of them.

I applied to a few on spec and none of them got back to me.

the one I was most keen on doing I followed up on my application a couple of times and eventually got an interview with the company.

the managing director told me he was inundated with CVs for the role but that none of them had any relevant experience. so while ideally they are supposed to be for people to get experience the employer expected the people looking for experience to have some relevant experience already if you know what I mean.

so in summary don't think that just because you are willing to do the job for free that that is enough to qualify you to do it.. you also have to demonstrate that you want to do it and if you have relevant experience that also helps

Thanks Gollem, can I ask was that for WPP1 (Graduates) where they specifically ask you not to apply unless you have a relevant degree?

When you say you followed it up was that with a phone call or more emails or what?

And finally did it help you get a proper job in the end?

Gollem - I thought that was absolutely shocking and sent them an email complaining about data protection etc. What a joke!

I have a WPP1 available for graduates in web design and online marketing for a new multimedia website at the moment. It is not 9 months working for free, but 3-4 , depending on when this start-up secures its next round of funding. After that it'll be permanent and fully paid, the employer is also offering an Employee Share Ownership Program (ESOP) for loyal people.

The jobs are for a new multimedia website that'll be selling music and movies- its backed by the major players in the music industry and will be competing with iTunes.

I was talking to some company about a WPP programme, and to be honest its a load of cack

they are dreaming if they think they can get some grads with specific experience in such and such a (technical) field and epxect to get work done for gratis.

Im sure the candidate for this would be hugely motivated for this job knowing they would get diddly squat for up to 9 months, and then be told thanks but no thanks.

    meh...

    lol more like

Some would say "we" prefer to stay "at home" on the couch or in bed rather than go out to work/get experience.

from a quick scan of of the email addresses of all those doing, or have done, the WPP (also see ecletichoneys post) many of them are not Irish names.

I have that email in front of me and in fairness although there's a good few foreign names , the vast vast majority are Irish. The foreign names just stand out more because they are unusual !

What is this email? Was there a thread about it?

The geniuses in fas were sending around an email to wpp current/former participants and put all the addresses in CC and instead of BCC (blind carbon copy) so everyone who got it could clearly see all the other 2000 email addresses.

But they notified the data protection commissioner so everything is ok!

    You've got to love Boards.ie..

With all the posts on this forum criticising the WPP and you reply to my post (and stick an exclamation mark on the end) as if I inferred that the majority of people doing the WPP were foreign (which I didn't).
There are a lot of foreign names(particulary .pl email addresses).. and of course there are lots of Irish names too.

I'm assuming you have done the WPP if you have received this email, which begs the question why didn't you reply to Blindjustices post which basically is saying "Irish people are too good for WPP" ?

no i said people will emigrate and they are - people are going to the US to work illegally because they will get pay. People who are willing to tough it out and not lie around on the dole will go elsewhere. People with a bit of ambition will leave. I wouldnt rate future career prospects with a company who arent willing or cant afford to pay me. I also think there is also a lack of respect shown. Companies taking advantage of free labour and what company wouldnt. To hell with it. Brain drain.

    well your original post read

I assumed you are equating the WPP with "being treated like dirt" which from my experience is not the case.

Another point to note is that this list only reflects those who were "successful" in getting a WPP.. as anyone who has applied for a WPP can tell you , just because you are willing to work for free doesn't mean that an employer will automatically take you on.

I would be interested to know what the break down is between irish applicants and non-irish applicants for these positions.

anyhoo there is a debate over on the Irish economy board about WPP if anyone is interested.

Am I right in thinking that if your are doing one of these work placements and work part time as well, that your social welfare entitlements will be considered the same as someone who is just working part time? As in not getting the full social welfare?
