Suggestions on a new car....

I'm currently thinking of changing my car. I'm currently driving a petrol but think it might be time to switch over to the dreaded diesel!

Anytime I do a search I come up with sh*tty 2.0l 130bph Audi's and the likes. I'm looking for something with more power than that - ideally 200bph plus...

I'm looking for either a saloon or reasonable sized coupe. I'm not a Subaru driver so there out!

Price range is €35 - €40K (i.e. €15-20k for my own plus the balance cash)

I'll be changing in the new year so I'm ideally looking for something 08,09 or 10.

I suppose my options at the moment are:

    Audi A4/A5 2.7 TDI
    BMW 325/330/335D
    BMW 6 series diesel

I know there's equivalent Jag (XF) and Mercedes (C & E Class) that might fit the bill. I'm a youngish driver (mid 20's) so I don't really want to be getting into the whole Jag XF or E Class style.

I was wondering do you guys have any other suggestions....

    No Octavia's please!!

A few posters here have purchased them and are very happy with them. Hold tough and the right one will come. TBH the Audi is very under specced and the 3.0 will look like the 2.0 poverty spec.

Xf Jag dont do it for me at all. 335 ticks a lot of boxes except the asking price..:)

    This one is nice http://www.driving.ie/usedcars/index.cfm?fuseaction=car&carID=201041199842699

I was looking at that one a while ago. They've priced themselves out of it. I know of a 08 335D M Sport Coupe that went for €33k recently and it was a much higher spec than the 09 Conlan's have.

That was cheap. I didnt realise that was a saloon.:o I am not a fan of the UK spec. I think that maybe the only option if you want one.

Audi A5 Quattro. I wouldnt get the FWD. A member here has one and has handling issues like excessive wheel jump when taking off.

I'd have the 6 series anyday. There ain't too many of them on the road and they look really good.

I'm a fan of Lexus as well, I know they are boring japanese toyotas to most people. But they have excellent reliability and great spec. The IS220d is a 175bhp so it has a good bit of power, pity its not an auto though. Plus you would get a brand new 2011 one for your budget

Again the problem is that nice 635's are extremely rare on the ground in Ireland. Only 2 08's on carzone and one of them is sold. Only 15 - 20 in the UK that would fit the bill. I'd be doing well to pick an 08 up for under £30k in the UK.

The ones that are around are quite expensive - €50k for an 08 635D. Granted they are lovely cars and would look considerably different to showing up in a car that most people wouldn't be a to tell the difference between it and a basic 320 SE (i.e. the 335), but they does that really bother me? Probably not.

It's just such a pity that there isn't a better range of mid/high end 1/2 year old cars in Ireland. The crappy new VRT and Motor Tax rules means that even more bottom end pieces of sh*t are coming onto the market. Damn the Greens!

Saloon.....coupe - why not have both? €30-35k should have you in a 2008 Merc CLS 320 CDI. How about a BMW 530d or 535d?

Or you could modify the criteria and get a 2005 BMW M5 or Merc CL500 coupe for €20-25k and keep the change for tax and petrol!
