Well Jim, I don't decoy ducks because I don't have anywhere to shoot ducks. Its all about to change though as I have just got into a wildfowling club. It is something I definatley want to learn though so I will be keeping an eye on this thread. Responses can be like buses though you wait a week for one and then you get ten in an hour;) ;)

Chris Greens dvds are the bees knees. The second wildfowling one is the best for decoying ducks he explains it well. All his dvds are good and I was talking to him at the CLA gamefair and he is one sound man.;)

    Jim,
    Some common sense information:
Find out their patterns, where the birds feed, where they want to be and put your decoys there or close by.
You can get by with a half dozen decoys if the ducks want to be there but you may need a big spread 6 dozen plus if you are just trying to draw them in.
Call sparingly unless you are good at it and I mean good. One sour note and the jig is up. Learn the call's in the off season.
Variety in your decoy spread is more important in my opinion, a few teal mixed in with a dozen mallards of wigeon add variety and realism. Keep the teal together. Space the mallard deeks about a meter apart and leave a landing spot in the centre. Face the deeks into the wind. Location is perhaps the most important aspect of waterfowling. Basically, hunt where you’ve seen ducks. Shallow backwaters off big rivers, smaller ponds, big ponds, etc. - try and situate on their preferred flight lines. Confidence decoys, a ( heron, seagull, pigeon, crow etc.) add that settled look and realism.

Pick up any shiny objects- plastic bottles, cans etc. -flotsam and jetsam - in the vicinity of your hide.

    Good luck.

    thanks for your help.
theres a nice shallow little bay on this lake, i often see the mallard there early morning when the sun is on it.
is it worth feeding an area like this?

Using an electronic call to lure game in a hunting/shooting situation is ILLEGAL

    From 1976 Wildlife Act...............

    http://www.irishstatutebook.ie/1976/en/act/pub/0039/sec0035.html#sec35

35.—(1) Notwithstanding anything contained in this Act apart from this section, but subject to section 42, a person shall not—

    (a) use as a scarecrow any live wild bird which is tethered, or

    (b) use as a decoy for the purpose of hunting any wild bird a live wild bird which is tethered or secured by braces or other similar appliances or which is confined in a cage or pen or which is blind, maimed or injured, or

    (c) use a stuffed or artificial decoy in the form of any bird for the purpose of hunting any protected wild birds, other than wild duck and wild geese, or

    (d) use an electrical or other instrument or appliance (including recording apparatus) emitting or imitating birdcalls or the calls of wild mammals for the purpose of hunting a protected wild bird or a protected wild animal which is a mammal.

    Spunk,

It means one can not use "tethered live birds" as decoys.

And I'm just telling you that it is illegal, which doesn't seem to bother you

Hopefully you'll get what you deserve ;)

What's working for you is breaking the law. Not only do shooters have to be within the law, they have to be seen to be within the law. It's tricky enough to get licenses for some people without other people publicly abusing those they were granted.

It'd be better form to thank those trying to save you from yourself, rather than taking a swipe at them. Between this thread and a couple of others, I'd strongly suggest you brush up on some laws before posting.

so back on topic as "it" started off interesting. Electronic callers are illegal but would that not mean duck callers i.e mouth ones be illegal also as it is an instrument or appliance? let us know
