Have been thinking about improving my home isulation. Mid terrace build 1950's solid block to front have 2 story extension to back cavity block batten with woolfibre not sure thickness, covers most of back of house. with the recent cold snap has made up my mind. I know there is a grant, was looking for a few ideas what to go for what to avoid. thanks for taking time to reply

Not knowing construction it's hard to picture, the front wall Drylined with Insulated Board. Fibreglass on new extension not great, but tce house does not lose much heat due to sheltered sides.

Have you upgraded heating system, controls, Windows, etc. Attic ?

I saw an ad in a local paper recently for external insulation, 3 bed semi done for €4500 minus govt grant of €4000. I suspect you have to pay the tradesman the €4500 upfront and then claim the €4000 back. I really don't think so!
I suspect there are a number of people/companys moving into the market who may not really be up to task so beware:rolleyes:

    Thanks for replies.
Had windows replace about six years ago upvc double glase.
Actic insulated about 12 years ago could probaly do with up grade.
heating is gas, installed about 12 years ago. would rather sort insulation before tackling heating as heat will just be lost.
Dry lining not really a option to much trouble.
was thinking more in line of outside insulation (EWI) for front, and pumping in insulation to cavity wall at back of house.
has anyone any experince with EWI, would you recommend it, good reliable contractors, cost. thanks

Had EWI done on my house last Easter and certainly feeling the benefit now.

    I used these <SNIP>
Check it out -lots of info and photos-even my house I see with work in progress.
I found this pass week I am turning heat down rather then up and house is retaining heat for much longer.EWI is not as messy as Internal-but it took around 5 weeks to complete-rain stopped play during the period.

You should consider employing an experienced BER assessor.He/She should be able to recommend improvements to your insulation/heating system and heating controls and recommend suitably qualified contractors. If you apply for the SEAI Grant some of the assessors fee will be covered.Check the SEAI Website for all available grants

Had the Halo sevice from ESB very prompt.
Recommends Complete EWI of House. Not cavity wall on extension as i stated Hollow block.
Now trying to get idea of what price to be expecting. not getting contractor to look at it until after xmas.
there is about 135 sq meters of external wall.
    Anyone with rough idea
    Thanks

External wall insulation costs 95-105 euro per m2 depending on product, installer etc, in the Dublin region.

    Does this price include plastering?

    Thank you

Yes, from what I am aware. Price varies due to a number of factors. I stated 95-105 euro, as this price includes a profit for the contractor.

When doing work like this, the cheapest is not necessarily the best, look for quality.

Look for installers approved by Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland. And look to see previous work by the contractor.

EWI is certainly an excellent solution, 85-100 euro per m2 seems around the going rate. I was quoted 75 to 150 euro per m2 when I went to look for quotes, one of the companies quoting 75 was a local one with a very good reputation so I went with them, very happy with the job. Only a 1 degree drop in temps between the internal walls and the windows as the insulation wraps around the frames. Granted I installed triple glazed windows with insulated frames (glass u value 0.5, overall 0.7) but in any case the minimal thermal bridging makes external insulation a brilliant system when installed correctly

we are currently doing the external insulation down in waterford.the going rate is 100 euro per m2 including material and 40 euro m2 if u want to get material yourself but there is a lot of hassle in getting it so better off leaving it to the contractor to get it.
