    Hi All,

Have a bit of a query, hope someone can help out on.

I am in the process of building a competition website when it goes live it will go up on a VPS hosting pacakge
This will plainly be a competition site where Joe bloggs comes along selects a few horses enters their details and receives their email.

On a VPS hosting package, you have to take care of your own SQL installation & licensing etc...

What type of SQL License do I need to buy for this?
Do I need to allow for multiple licenses/users?

Googling this unfortunatly lead into a loop of Microsoft this and Microsoft that on Cloud set up, but my query relates to a website, not remote desktop etc..

    Any help appreciated

    Cheers
    Snookered

Is there any reason why you have to use Microsoft? There are other free SQL compliant database servers available.

Have a look at Firebird It is a good open source alternative to MS SQL Server.

    Thanks for the suggestions,
The thing is i've been told I have to use Microsoft SQL and already have it here to install

I'm just concerned about the Licensing of sql, will I need to install extra cal's to allow the website users to enter?

Or will a single server installation do the job
I don't want to be using SQL cal's if there not needed

    Thanks
    Paul

You cannot licence SQL Server using CAL's for the web - http://www.microsoft.com/sqlserver/2005/en/us/special-considerations.aspx#multiplexing

What you need is one of the free Express Editions - http://www.microsoft.com/express/Database/

Web Edition (if you need it) is usually quite cheap per month (about $25).

Go with express but don't forget about the MS Partner program (IIRC €150 per annum for the Action pack subscription and you get almost everything from them!)
