By the looks of things, T2 seems to be reserved for Aer Lingus and Long-haul flights (US bound flights and Ethiad flights).

I wonder if it will ever open up for use by Inter-European flights (Air France, SAS, BA, Lufthansa etc...)? It would interesting to try out the new terminal, but unless I'm going to the US, Abu Dabi, or plan to use Aer Lingus; I guess I won't be doing that for a while yet.

Does anyone know if that will change? Or is this simply it's designed perpose (Long-Haul terminal)?

It has US immigration, so it makes sense for all US-bound flights to use it. This also has the effect of making it desirable for foreign long-haul operators to use it as a refuelling point, as people can do their immigration procedure while the plane is being refueled.

Aer Lingus is pushing the ability to interchange between their North American and European routes (and do immigration) in the one place.

It is less useful for the like of Ryanair, who only serve the European (& nearby) market.

Am I wide off the mark in thinking the reason why the US has immigration in Ireland because it is likely to be Irish people using it?

If Air Afriqyah or PIA start routing through Dublin are the yanks as likely to want to have an immigration outpost in DUB and SNN?

Rejecting someone at immigration in the US, means paying much more to repatriate them.

Immigration at a lot of American airports is notoriously congested also.

But why is Ireland the only country in Europe to have it?

Ireland and the USA have had a very strong relationship throughout history. As I understand it, it was originally intended that Irish people would get automatic residency in the States but Sean Lemass was worried about a brain drain and got the US to close that.

So we have a situation where there is US immigration in Ireland. Is that because of the strong links Irish people have with the USA? Frankfurt airport had a US airbase on site for years which would provide accomodation for the officials, administration etc, never mind being able to take pressure off Stateside from one of the busiest airports going to there but still they didn't get it. Also, it has better links in terms of repatriating people.

We only got it in the late 80s. I'd imagine we were the only country in Europe who considered it beneficial enough to a large amount of our population to bother.

The US couldn't plonk CBP in to Frankfurt without either the Lander or most likely the Federal Govt. agreeing to it as its an extraterritorial extension; same applies for anywhere else.

But in the 80s, all you'd have had to do was cross the runway from the terminal and you'd be on US soil. According to Wikipedia, Rhein-Main airbase closed in 2005. If you go on to Google Maps, there are some cool ghost-town pictures on Panoramio of the base.

If it is for the benefit of the US to have overseas border controls to reduce congestion in the States then Frankfurt would have been the ideal.

Again, I come from no particular experience, but I can't help but think that the US border controls in Ireland are a favour extended from the States to us. And if we encourage other countries to come through Dublin to take advantage of it then we will be operating outside of the spirit for which it was initially intended.

British Airways are already using the facility in Shannon
