Get yeer anoraks on and read these documents :)

    http://www.rte.ie/about/tenders/routingsystem/

While it appears that RTE can pick up HD , eg "EBU HD IRD MPEG4 "the wording of these documents implies that they cannot output HD and will not be able to until late 2011.

And RTE1 is to go HD..some time.

Yes of course RTE1 will go HD in 2011 or 2012, and TG4 maybe 2012 or 2013 and even TV3 in 2013 or 2014.

    All very interesting
RTÉ is seeking proposals for the supply of a replacement of the current Vision Routing System, including System Integration and outboard equipment in the Television Centre.

I used to occasionally do vision routing on a "desk" in BBC. It doesn't actually imply anything about ability to output HD or process HD, but ability to "switch it" by remote without different people going to different patch panels and plugging stuff manually.

It's slightly used for transmission but more used for Production, Presentation and changeing live feeds. Non-live changes can be patched in advance and also depend on a playout system. A playout system replaces Tape with HDD. Lyric FM is entirely electronic and as well as storage in Limerick (where they surprisingly are based) can use HDD files for playout or editing from Montrose.

The recently tendered Playout system for RTE2 does for HD Video what the Lyric FM system does for Audio.

Pg 12 is existing A/V router system in RTE.
    then we have
    4 Requirements
The requirement is to replace the existing router with a system that has capacity of at least 512 by 512 (512 squared) crosspoints that are capable of carrying SD or HD embedded signals. Ideally the system should scale beyond this size to potentially 1024squared. The system will initially be populated with SD 320 inputs/ sources and 320 outputs/ destinations. It will also include 64 HD inputs and 64 HD outputs.
There is also a requirement to provide down conversion, up conversion and cross-conversion between HD and SD.
Respondents must provide a complete solution including all additional cabling, jackfields, distribution amplifiers, video and audio conversion equipment, audio embedders and de-embedders etc. The number of circuits that need embedding and de-embedding is shown in the totals in Section 4.5 and is based on employing external converters. Tenderers may propose alternative solutions for embedding and de-embedding if they feel it will provide a more effective solution.
Respondents may opt to replace fully or re-use the existing control system. The control system proposed must operate natively with the proposed router without the use of protocol convertors. The solution must operate to the highest possible levels of reliability.
Respondents must be aware that the proposed solution will need to be easily relocated during its lifetime and to this end the response must indicate the break points and failover options which have been considered in the design of the proposed solution.

Because they want to sell off part of Donnybrook when the Property market recovers and build a new shiny place that they misleadlingly suggested to planning folk was needed to do HD. All they need for HD is some boxes and some new cameras really.
Support SDI signals as defined in SMPTE 259M
Support 1.5 Gbit/s HD-SDI described in SMPTE 292M (coaxial) and SMPTE 297M (Optical)
Support 3 Gbit/s HD-SDI described in SMPTE 424M-2006 (Coaxial) and SMPTE 297M (Optical)
Loads of stuff can be carried on ordinary SDI
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serial_Digital_Interface
It's related to ASI that comes out of Professional Receivers (IRDs) and goes into DVB-T modulators or Multiplexing systems
    SDI is : 270 Mbit/s, 360 Mbit/s, 143 Mbit/s, and 177 Mbit/s

If RTE get a 2nd Playout system and a bunch of HD cameras, as well as this, then they would be well on the way to a fully HD environment.

Meanwhile (before this gear is installed) with the one playout system aleady specified last Summer and a bit of manual patching they could if pushed to it do live HD on one channel and recorded HD on another at the same time. If they had two DTT multiplexes. There is only space for one HD channel today.
