Hello , with the prospect of a general election in the new year and having not voted before I have a question. Can you only vote for a candidate from the constituency where you live?.

no, you can vote for all of them if you like. when you vote you put down your preference beside them. 1st, 2nd, 3rd etc

EDIT: oops read that as "one" candidate rather than "a"

Pretty much; the only caveat is that it's not precisely "where you live"; it's where your vote is registered.

So if you're renting and still have your vote registered at "the home place", or have moved since the last election, you need to check it you, as that registration address is the one that counts.

    Hmmmm.....wonder where Ivor Callely's vote is ? ;)

Yes. You are effectively choosing who will be your constituency's representitive in Dail Eireann.
